  2. English II Writing Two essays – Expository and Persuasive Essays weighted equally—each 26% of total writing score One page—a maximum of 26 lines for each composition (25 “light lines” plus the heavy “border line” at the bottom of the writing space); no “double-lining” allowed

  3. STAAR Writing Performance Score Point 1—VERY LIMITED Score Point 2—BASIC Score Point 3—SATISFACTORY Score Point 4—ACCOMPLISHED

  4. English II Reading Two short answer reading questions and 38 multiple choice on each assessment A total of 56 points on reading test: multiple choice worth 38 points (68% of total score) and short answer questions worth 18 points (32% of total score) Each short answer reading question based on a 0−3 rubric and weighted by 3, for a total of 9 points

STAAR Short Answer Guidelines • STAAR English I, II, and III reading tests require students to answer two short answer reading questions. • Students are provided one 10-line response box to answer each question. • While students may use all 10 lines to respond to each question, they cannot write more than 10 lines. • Students are not allowed to add lines inside the box or to write outside the box.

  6. What is a ZERO? • Whole answer is wrong • Whole answer is confusing and vague • Answers another questions instead • Answer only tells the plot

  7. What is a (1)? • Answer is correct but… Evidence is missing Evidence is wrong Evidence is vague • Evidence is good but… Answer is missing Answer is wrong Answer is vague NOTE: Only give ONE answer for the question!

  8. What is a (2)? • Answers the question with an explanation • Gives evidence to back up the answer that matches up with the answer Quote paraphrase, specific synopsis

  9. What is a (3)? • Particularly thoughtful, insightful answer • Strong and thoughtful text evidence • Depth of understanding and ability to connect answer and text evidence to the reading.

  10. To BAT your short answer, you simply Borrow from the question in order to Answerit, then provide Text evidence to support your answer.

  11. In the 1st sentence: Borrow from the question IN the • Repeat words or phrases from the question so that you are answering it directly and accurately.

  12. 1st sentence continuedAnswer it! • A specific, complete sentence answer to the question including a strong, clear opinion.

  13. 2nd Sentence: Text Evidence (that means an embedded quotation) •cite an example from the text to support your answer. • It MUST relate to your position! • Throwing in a quote “just because” could detrimental to your score!
