  1. AWAKE Experimental Area Layout With layout views from V. Clerc A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  2. Outline • General progress • Major modifications since October 2012 • Awake in CNGS • Design Report base line layout • Awake in the West Area • Design Report base line layout A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  3. Major modifications since October • General (CNGS+West Area) • Lasers in separate dust-free and T-controlled lab • Lasers (esp. seeding) have direct path • E-beam has direct path • Klystron in “clean” (ionizing radiation & e-magnetic interference) and accessible area • CNGS only • E-beam tunnel and laser passage • Shielding and dust-proof separations to CNGS target area • West Area only • 50m-long trench • Voluminous proton beam dump with extra shielding A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  4. Awake in CNGS • CNGS: • AWAKE: A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  5. Awake in CNGS: contamination CNGS – downstream part of the target chamber • Highly radioactive (CNGS target) and contaminated area, which can be isolated (no ventilation) but still needs dehumidification • Compatible with Awake if • shielding chicane towards Awake area • dust proof separation doors towards all areas • modification of CNGS ventilation system • overhead crane limited to upstream part of target chamber CNGS ventilation A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  6. Awake in CNGS – access • Since an accidental loss of the full proton beam along the beam line can lead to high radiation dose levels in the entire underground AWAKE experimental area, access to the underground AWAKE area is forbidden during proton beam. • Access to the Klystron area is allowed during electron beam • Access to the laser lab is allowed for laser experts during laser beam • The control room will be located at the nearest accessible point during proton beam, i.e. in the CNGS access pit (ECA4, at 1km) A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  7. Awake in CNGS – civil engineering • The klystron must be housed in an accessible and low radiation area free of any electro-magnetic interference. In order to allow access to the klystron during electron beam only, a 30-cm thick concrete shielding wall is built around the electron source to attenuate the X-rays emitted from the source. • The electron beam line must run as straight as possible. Therefore a dedicated connection tunnel transports the electron beam line to the proton beam line tunnel. • The laser systemmust be housed in a dedicated, dust-free and temperature regulated area. An airlock is installed at the entrance of the laser lab and towards the power supplies. The area is kept at a higher pressure than the ventilation chamber. • The high power seeding laser should be brought to the proton beam line as directly as possible, with a minimum of mirrors and changes of direction. Therefore a dedicated connection tunnel is built to connect the laser area with the proton beam tunnel. E-source & klystron Lasers & power supplies Optical tables & OTR screen Junction laser & proton beam A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  8. Awake in CNGS – beam dumps • The CNGS proton beam dump is located about 1.2 km downstream of the plasma cell, and will be used as Awake proton beam dump. The CNGS beam equipment before the beam dump is modified (where needed) to allow the passing of the AWAKE proton beam without significant interaction with CNGS equipment. • The electron beam dump is located immediately behind the electron spectrometer. Energy deposition estimates lead to the beam dump being made up of a 30-cm thick block of iron and a 30-cm thick block concrete shielding. • The laser beam dump is located on the first optical table after the plasma cell. Optical table & OTR screen E-quads & e-spectro E-detector & e-dump Plasma cell A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  9. Awake in CNGS – next studies • CNGS is the preferred site (see Edda’s talk) • Layout is currently frozen for Design Report • However, all comments and corrections are welcome (and needed)  ans.pardons@cern.chand will be taken into account in the next study phase • Looking forward to fruitful discussions… • … but first a few words about the West Area option A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  10. AWAKE in West Area A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  11. Awake in West Area – civil engineering • In order to respect legal radiation limits (see Helmut’s talk) • The proton beam energy is reduced to 300GeV • The proton beam is bent downwards (2.6°) • Proton beam dump becomes ++-sized  Trench & voluminous proton beam dump with extra shielding(upstream and downstream) A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  12. Awake in West Area – civil engineering • Trench: 50m long, 3.5m wide at depth of 1-3.5 m • Proton beam dump includes a ~100m long, 10m wide wedge-shaped concrete shielding (for beam impact at minus 2m) Additionally, we need a new 1500m2 storage building for the radioactive elements currently stored in TT4-TT5, a new power convertor building and relocation of the labs and workshops in building 183 and 180  $$$ A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout

  13. Awake in West Area • Laser lab & access conditions the same as for CNGS option • Control room rather close-by (but still outside of area, in new building) • Electron beam line must bend down into trench (for all the rest: see CNGS option) A. Pardons - Experimental Area Layout
