Remember that the objective when writing an ad is to use as few words and characters as possible to keep the cost down. Find out how much it costs per word to print a “Help Wanted” ad in your local newspaper. Google? Write your want ad, being as clear and concise as possible. Then, calculate the cost of your ad at the going rate. Ads will be evaluated according to “best message” and “most economical.” Want Ad---The Ideal EC Employee HELP WANTED

  23. “How Can You Tell?” Appendix 2.02B • Directons: • May I have a volunteer to read the opening paragraphs? • Discuss meanings of terms used to describe successful employees. • You may use your notes as a reference for terms and definitions. • Develop applicant profiles according to directions on handout. • Group yourself according to DOB…whoever has a birthday closest to yours….talk to each other to find out. • Collect all applicant profiles and distribute randomly. • For each profile, have teams of students plan and present a two-minute role play in which the applicant is seen displaying, or not displaying, the characteristics described in the profile. • Observe and see if you can identify the characteristic and tell how an employee with this characteristic might affect the effective operation of a child care center. • Look at next slide…..

  24. It seems a “no-brainer” that anyone would want an employee who is honest, patient, kind, reliable, and so on. The list of desirable characteristics for staff members is not surprising at all. Perhaps there are other positive qualities that you would add to the list; but the more critical question becomes: How can you tell when a person has these characteristics? Basically, when you are the person doing the hiring, you may have to be very observant to determine from an interview whether an applicant has the characteristics needed to be effective as a member of the staff and to work well with children. Let’s use role play to gain some practice at this. Write a profile of an early childhood applicant. Include the person’s name, age, and other characteristics of your choice. Include evidence of at least three positive characteristics and evidence that at least one positive characteristic is missing. Describe the person in such a way as to make him/her seem “believable.” We will use the applicant profiles to role play excerpts from interviews and see how observant we can be! Please do not share what you have written with any other students. Characteristics Needed to Work Successfully with Children Patient Reliable Willingness to learn Kind Sense of humor Confident in abilities Honest Mature judgment Tolerant of family differences Knowledgeable of child development Committed to children and families How Can You Tell? Do not cut apart!

  26. “Who Does What?” Appendix 2.02D • Fill in the blanks naming staff member positions in a child care center. • Word bank on next slide • Outline an organizational chart for staff in a center. • Have them use flow chart format with boxes for positions and lines to show relationships among positions. • I will show you how • Or you can use publisher

  27. 2.02 D word bank • Intern • Volunteer • Patient • Substitute • Kind • Administrator • Committed • Teacher • Honest • Reliable • Tolerant • Lead teacher • Confident Teacher • Teacher’s aide
