  1. Bellringer 16/24 & 21/24 Make the two fractions equivalent fractions : 2/3 & 7/8 5/9 & 1/3 5/9 & 3/9

  2. 3-2, 3-3Adding and SubtractingFRACTIONS!!!! .

  3. + & - Fractions – Big Rocks Get common denominators Get equivalent fractions Combine numerators Keep same denominator Simplify if needed

  4. First of all, you need a “common denominator”. This means the bottom numbers of each fraction must be the same. How do you ADD FRACTIONS?

  5. ¾ + ¼ ½ + 5/8 3/16 + 5/16 1 ½ + 3 ½ 10 3/16 + 3 5/8 15/16 + 3 3/8 2 7/8 + 2 3/8 YES NO YES YES NO NO YES Can These Be Added As Is (Do they have a common denominator)?

  6. Step 1 - Making a CommonDenominator ½ + 1/4 Cannot be added together... Yet. The common denominator is 4 2 | 2 4 1 2 2 x 1 x 2 = 4

  7. Step #2 - Converting the Fraction to Equivalent Fractions ½ + 1/4 ½ = ?/4 =2/4

  8. Step 3 - Combine the Fraction 2/4 + ¼ = Combine only the numerators … 2 + 1 = 3

  9. Step 4 – Keep numerator the same 2/4 + ¼ = Keep the denominator the same …. 4 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 THE ANSWER!!!

  10. Step 5 – Simplify if needed • So… 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 THE ANSWER!!! • Can you simplify ¾????????? • NO

  11. 1 + 3/16 1 - 1/8 1 - 9/16 1 - ½ 1 + ¾ 1 - 5/8 16/16 8/8 16/16 2/2 4/4 8/8 What fraction would you turn 1 into to complete the problem?

  12. 1 + 3/16 1 - 1/8 1 - 9/16 1 - ½ 1 + ¾ 1 - 5/8 16/16 8/8 16/16 2/2 4/4 8/8 Solve the problem!!! NOW!!!!  16/16 + 3/16 = 19/16 = 1 3/16 8/8 – 1/8 = 7/8 16/16 - 9/16 = 7/16 2/2 – ½ = 1/2 4/4 + ¾ = 7/4 = 1 3/4 8/8 – 5/8 = 3/8

  13. Add fractions then whole numbers 7 ¼ + 4 3/8 = 7 1 4 7 2 8 + 4 3 8 + 4 3 8 11 5 8

  14. What is the common denominator? 3 ¼ - 15/16 = 16 3 1 4 3 4 16 - 15 16 - 15 16

  15. Can’t subtract 4/16 from 15/16 • You need to borrow! 3 ¼ - 15/16 = 3 4 16 2 4 16 16 16 20 16 + = - 15 16 - 15 16

  16. Subtract fractions then whole numbers 3 ¼ - 15/16 = 2 20 16 - 15 16 2 5 . 16

  17. Make common denominators, then add fractions. Then whole numbers. 4 ½ + 2 7/8 = 4 1 2 4 4 8 + 2 7 8 + 2 7 8 6 11 8

  18. If improper fraction change to a mixed number 4 ½ + 2 7/8 = 4 4 8 11 8 3 8 = 1 + 2 7 8 Add the mixed number to the whole number. 6 11 8 6 3 8 3 8 + 1 = 7

  19. Homework Practice sheet 3-3 #2-18 evens show work #19-22 e.c. show work Will grade pg 132 #10-22 even (show work/steps even though you can use calculator for #14-22) .
