  9. 7 Perspectives on the Beatitudes 1.) The Implied Contrast with Pharisees Were the Pharisees humble? Were the grieving being comforted? Were the believers inheriting anything? Were the believers being filled? Were the believers obtaining mercy? Were the believers comprehending God? Were the peacemakers allowed to make peace? Were the persecuted exonerated? NO!

  13. 7 Perspectives on the Beatitudes 3.) The “Kingdom of Heaven” Bookend The Kingdom (or sovereignty) of HEAVEN It has Messiah for its King; It is from heaven; and under the heavens upon the earth; It is limited in scope; It is political in sphere; It is Jewish and exclusive in its character; It is national in its aspect; It is the special subject of the Old Testament prophecy; It is dispensational in its duration. Bullinger:Companion Bible

  14. 7 Perspectives on the Beatitudes 3.) The “Kingdom of Heaven” Bookend The Kingdom (or sovereignty) of GOD Has God for its Ruler; It is in heaven, over the earth; It is unlimited in its scope; It is moral and spiritual in its sphere; It is inclusive in its character (embracing the natural [Jews; and spiritual [Christians] seeds of Abraham…), Hence, It is universal in its aspect; It is the subject of New Testament revelation; And will be eternal in its duration. Bullinger:Companion Bible

They will be comforted in the Resurrection. (During Part B of the Kingdom) The “Rosetta Stone” of the Beatitudes

  17. Blessed are They that Mourn Isaiah 61:1-3 1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified.

  18. Blessed are They that Mourn 3.) The “Kingdom of Heaven” Bookend Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. They will be comforted in the Resurrection. 23. Faith 101 – The Virtues of Faith

  24. Blessed are They that Mourn 7.) Faith 101 – The Virtues of Faith Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. The Virtue of going to God for help The Virtue of Equanimity The quality of an inherent evenness of temper that is not easily disturbed The Virtue of Composure The quality of disciplining one’s emotions in a trying situation

  25. Blessed are They that Mourn Don’t be angry with God. He stands ready to help. James 1:13-16 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.

  26. Blessed are They that Mourn Don’t be angry with God. He stands ready to help. James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. I John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

  27. Blessed are They that Mourn Don’t allow the evil to be perpetuated via your reaction to it. Evil is analogized to water. Reacting with more evil makes bigger waves. Psalms 69 1 Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. 2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. 13 But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O Lord, {in} an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation. 14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

  28. Blessed are They that Mourn Don’t allow the evil to be perpetuated via your reaction to it. Evil is analogized to water. Reacting with more evil makes bigger waves. Psalms 69 15 Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me. 16 Hear me, O Lord; for thy lovingkindness {is} good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies. 17 And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily. 18 Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.

  29. Blessed are They that Mourn Don’t allow the evil to be perpetuated via your reaction to it. Evil is analogized to water. Reacting with more evil makes bigger waves. Psalms 18:14-17 14 Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them. 15 Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils. 16 He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters. 17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.

  30. Blessed are They that Mourn Job 1:6-9 6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. 7 And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. 8 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? 9 Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

  31. Blessed are They that Mourn Job’s Example 10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. 11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. 12 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.

  32. Blessed are They that Mourn Do not allow evil to make you sin Job 1 (Satan destroyed all Job had and killed all of his children) 20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, 21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. 22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

  33. Blessed are They that Mourn Job 2 4 And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. 5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. 6 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he {is} in thine hand; but save his life. 7 So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. 8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

  34. Blessed are They that Mourn Job 2 9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? Curse God, and die. 10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

  35. Blessed are They that Mourn Job 38 38:1 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, 2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. 4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. 5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? 6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

  36. Blessed are They that Mourn Job 38 7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? 8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? 9 When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it, 10 And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors, 11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

  37. Blessed are They that Mourn Job 40 6 Then answered the Lord unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said, 7 Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. 8 Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous? 9 Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him? 10 Deck thyself now with majesty and excel-lency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.

  38. Blessed are They that Mourn Job 40 11 Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him. 12 Look on every one that isproud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place. 13 Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret. 14 Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee.

  39. Blessed are They that Mourn Job 42 1 Then Job answered the Lord, and said, 2 I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee. 3 Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. 4 Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. 5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. 6 Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

  40. Blessed are They that Mourn Job 42 10 And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. 11 Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold. 12 So the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses. 13 He had also seven sons and three daughters.

  41. Blessed are They that Mourn Romans 12 14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. 15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. 16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. 17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

  42. Blessed are They that Mourn Romans 12 18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. 20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. 21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
