  4. Borders Atlantic Ocean= moisture from ocean NC is in the “sun belt.” Being in the South means we are closer to equator = warmer temp., more sunlight NC as a state

  5. Costal Plain (sub region is the Tidewater), Piedmont, Mountains 3 Regions of NC:

  6. Eastern part of the state (closest to Atlantic) 1) Coastal Plain

  7. Outer Banks which are barrier islands- protect mainland from storms, winds off ocean. Storms hit islands 1st, weaken. • Sandbar: • Barrier- keep something out. • Why is it important to keep storms out of the mainland?

  8. Outer Banks were dangerous for early ships which crashed b/c of changing winds, and sandbars, shallow channels. Called the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”

  9. Costal Plain (sub region is the Tidewater),

  10. Tidewater: rivers & water change w/ ocean tide, lots of marsh & swamps 0 elevation! Subregion:

  11. Access to many rivers, fishing Flat land! FARMING!!! Loam (soil mixed with sand, dead plants) is very fertile Natural Resources

  12. Color- Piedmont

  13. Middle of NC, lots of rolling hills. Fall line separates Piedmont & Coast (see waterfalls b/c of change in elevation) Piedmont

  14. Less fertile soil b/c of clay & more rocks. Many minerals, valuable stones- ex granite, quartz Natural Resources

  15. Color- Mountains

  16. Western part of state, highest elevation = colder climate. Home of Appalachian Mountains. Longest mnt chain on east coast. Mnts. block cold air masses and precipitation = more rain & snow. in mnts Mountains

  17. Soil too rocky for major farming Lots of mineral resources Variety of trees = NC leading wood manufacturer Natural resources
