  4. Starter • Draw what you think the perfect castle design would be! • Remember some of the advantages and disadvantages of a Motte and Bailey and Stone Keep Challenge – Add on any ways to attack or defend it!

  5. The Development of Castles • Watch this clip and think about: • What measures were put in place to build better defence for a castle? • What were they made out of? • What is a mote and what was the other option if you could not have a proper mote? • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eoi02tsn48

  6. Over to you! As we go through the steps in the development of castles, draw your castles to illustrate what might be happening and why! Draw what you hear!

  7. The year is 1126 Some English people have worked out that they can make your stone castle collapse, oh dear! They are digging holes under the stone walls and if they dig under it, the stone collapses into the hole. Your castles are about to be ruined! So! • You need to add extra defences! • You must act quickly – do not redesign your whole castle, just add something that will protect it. • Stone and money is available!

The year is 1272 • Even if you have built an extra wall or a mote, the English people have worked out that they can just surround your castle with people (a siege). • If 100s of people surround the castle, the soldiers are trapped in one place, and will die! You must revise your design and make sure: • That the soldiers cannot be trapped in one place, it may be a good idea to have lots of smaller castles within one. • That you have round walls to prevent walls from falling down when people dig under them.

Stick the source in the middle of your page Around the outside: • Describe what you see in the picture and label as many ways of attacking and defending a castle as possible. Clues – Describe any weapons. Describe what is going on. Are people trying to knock the castle down? Or burn it down? Or climb in? Challenge – Who would want to attack a castle and why? Put stars by the 2 best attacking and 2 best defending methods Which method of attacking and defending do you think would be the most effective? Explain why.

Using your sheet, explain 2 of the best ways attackingand 2 of the best ways of defending a castle. Make sure you use specific examples and think back to the start of the lesson and how castles changed and developed. Challenge – Think about ways you might defend against the attack methods. How would you directly react if an attack was happening?

  17. Extended writing task Level 1 – You have included and explained 2 ways of attacking and defending a castle. Level 2 – You have come to a judgement about the most effective way of attacking and defending a castle, and used more than 2 examples for each. Level 3 – You have come to a judgement and used all the evidence to back up your reasons for stating which method is the most effecting for attacking and defending, and explaining why other methods are NOT as effective. Write a letter to William about either: a) you have designed an indestructible castle (You must include the features you have included for the castle) b) that you have planned the best attack on a castle. (You must give details of what you are going to use to attack the castle)
