The Pearl • John Steinbeck uses colorful adjectives and rich descriptions in his parable The Pearl. • Write an Essay: • Describing the social customs in La Paz, identify what problems Kino and Juana are faced with then create a thesis statement about the culture. Write your paper using real cited sources from the story to prove your position. • *Bonus: Extend the writing by not only identifying problems in La Paz but also in current modern society.

Essay option Literary Analysis • Symbolism: • Analyze Steinbeck’s skill using personification, symbolism, metaphors, similes , foreshadowing, and irony. • Theme: • Identify a theme of this parable and discuss with support what the author’s message was for the reader. • Discuss the importance and connections to modern lives possibly even your life. • Characterization: Choose between Kino or Juana take a position on their personality and character, strengths, weaknesses, motivation, morals, purpose, and position in life. Use real concrete cited sources for support.
