IRD Mission (1) Develop the uses of I&R in scientific R&D and in industrial processes; (2) Promote the advancement of knowledge of nuclear phenomena and techniques; (3) Stimulate techniques, materials, equipment, and facilities that use I&R in research through the collaboration of industrial, governmental, medical, and educational institutions.

  5. *Participation with Other Professional Societies National Organization of Test, Research, and Training Reactors (TRTR) - represents nearly 50 research reactors IRD traditionally sponsors or co-sponsors one session at each national meeting devoted to research reactors Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) – co-sponsor for IRD Class I Safeguards Topical. INMM promotes best approaches and procedures for implementing all aspects of nuclear materials management American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) IRD Past-Chair is the ANS Liaison to AAAS Chemistry Division

  7. *Division/TG Services to Membership • Professional Development – series of workshops on activation analysis methods and applications • Vogt Scholarship – one $3000 award/yr • Peer Recognition/Awards • Radiation and Science and Technology award, and the Mashima Award. IRD supports the International Committee on Activation Analysis (ICAA) Young Scientist Award. • Student Support – IRD Focused Paper • $1000 Best Paper; $700 Student Conf. (2010) • $750 Best Paper; $500 Student Conf. (2009)

IRD Strategic/Succession Planning • 5 yr Strategic under development goes into place 2010 • 2010 elected IRD officers just announced: • Two experienced ANS leaders for top positions (Ch./Vice Ch.) • A 2008 Ph.D. Nuclear Engineer graduate elected Treasurer • Secretary – (not on ballot until 2010 elections) • Four (4) new Executive Board Members Total will be 14 including officers

IRD Communications • Web: http://ird.ans.org/ • Established 2003, items were updated following the June 2008 meeting in Anaheim, CA • Includes information on officers, minutes, committees, awards, events, meetings, and awards • E-mail: ird@list.ans.org • Used and useful • Newsletters are infrequent, but due in part to use of email such as the announcement of our previous Chairman receiving the Hevesy Metal – the “Nobel” of Neutron Activation Techniques in 2009.

IRD Services to Membership • Professional Development • Tutorial Session “Neutron Activation Analysis – Status after Five Decades”, Annual Meeting, June 12, 2008. • Scholarships • IRD contributes to the endowment of the Vogt Scholarship Award. • Peer Recognition/Awards • IRD supports the International Committee on Activation Analysis (ICAA) Young Scientist Award. Radiation and Science ant Technology award, and the Mashima Award • Student Support • IRD supports the ANS National Student conference by providing funds for best paper(s) in an IRD track. • IRD supports the student travel fund for the ANS meetings. • Plans to fund (endow) new student award with BMD

  17. Summary I • Areas of Success • IRD represents nearly 7.5% of full ANS Membership. • Awards: • Radiation Science and Technology Award • Mashima Award (joint Materials Sci. & Tech. Division) • Vogt Scholarship • Excellent and continuing growth of MARC Conference series • Excellent participation with other professional organizations • Successful ANS scholarships and peer awards • Strong, consistent financial statements and Award funding. • Plans to hold another embedded topical WM 2010 “Isotopes for Industry and Medicine” based on previous success in 2008 • Excellent National Meeting participation representing a growing ANS presences – more than 30 organized or co-sponsored from 2007 to present.
