  3. Convergent • The current tectonics of the Japanese arc system can be explained by the interaction of five plates: the Eurasia, Amur, Okhotsk, Pacific, and Philippine Sea plates • Jocelyne

Major Events • The subductions lie offshore • Majority of the earthquakes taking place under the sea rather than on land • March 11 2011 magnitude 8.9 earthquake hits off cost of tokyo Sendai ,japan ; tsunami warning out. • Earthquake was offshore about 230 miles from tokyo. Largest earthquake to hit japan in record history • Julian
