  1. ARC 406 Khobar Information forum Instructor: Dr. Jamal Al-Qawasmi Student: Ala Al-Mctoom

  2. Mission • The city of Khobar wishes to create a new kind of civil gathering place, which can build on the synergy of public and commercial information technology. The program is a combination of public amenity , educational facility, and commercial centre. • The inforum has two primary components, one public, the other commercial. The educational/public component is composed of a public Information and Multimedia Resource Center (IMRC) which will provide the community with access to a broad range of information resources. The IMRC will house a multimedia library including traditional and e-books, audio and videos, virtual reality (VR), internet access and other types of digital media.

  3. Considerations

  4. Media • The concept of media is basically composed out of three elements: Data, Medium and Receiver. • Interactivity should be introduced in the building, many mediums and elements have to be responsive to enhance the exploration of the user.

  5. Media • Some circulation paths should have a high level of responsivity, including a personal interactive indicator in the floor which functions as a navigator.

  6. Media • There is an options for audio to be heard through headphones which are responsive to the adjacent item in the exhibition, this is to avoid noise and enhance the experience.

  7. Media • The exhibition is the main circulation itself, and it can be experienced through VR technology using the head set in order to interact with multimedia content. This feature opens an architectural opportunity to come up with different designs (templates) for the circulation paths, so the user can experience it in different ways.

  8. Program

  9. Program • This is my reading of the program. The spaces are grouped depending on the function nature.

  10. Semantics • There are my interpretation of the spaces, and the meanings they send, and how they can be visually expressed.

  11. Inspirations

  12. Inspirations • I always loved microchips design. • Attribute of lines (Parallel lines). • No obstructions nor acute angles. • Expression of technology.

  13. Inspirations • Traditional treatment. • The triangle is a dominant element. • Three sides with three corners.

  14. Site

  15. Site Location • The site is located near the sea coast, situated in a corner of two major streets.

  16. Views • The main view into the site, is the vista at the east north side. • The building have to visually welcoming from these sides to attract the people who are driving.

  17. Climate • The building should be elongated to the east-west direction. • Glass openings at the south and west sides must be minimized as much as possible.

  18. Neighborhood • The site is located in an urban area, therefore, the building should have different entrances for pedestrian.

  19. Design Process • The design went through different alternatives and studies of people flow and functional requirements.

  20. Design Process • The design went through different alternatives and studies of people flow and functional requirements.

  21. Design Process • The design went through different alternatives and studies of people flow and functional requirements.

  22. Design Process • One of the concepts, three nods creating a looking inward design, leaving a triangle in the meddle.

  23. Design Process • One of the concepts, three nods creating a looking inward design, leaving a triangle in the meddle. • More spaces are created via extrusions and intrusions of the major three lines, and the three spheres.

  24. Design Process • MRC area consists of floating forms, which are the viewing areas.

  25. Design Process • Although I liked The design, it has many constrains. • I want to create a more liberated one.

  26. Final Idea • Two triangular shapes (spaces) are the hidden source of influence.

  27. Final Idea • The other spaces are situated concentrically, forming a looking inward design • The areas are easy to understand.

  28. Final Idea • Each of the spaces is independent. The main floor is in red

  29. Final Idea • Glass facades fill the gaps, forming entrances.

  30. Final Idea • The slab is not covering the whole ground. Creating different Spatial qualities

  31. Final Idea • The Two triangles are double height areas

  32. Final Idea • The roof coveres the whole thing

  33. Final Idea • This leaves vertical gaps which are filled with concrete and glass facade

  34. Final Idea • The sky light is placed on top of the atrium

  35. Final Idea • The sky light is placed on top of the atrium

  36. Site • The building with the site outline.

  37. In site • Parking layout.

  38. Zoning Plan • Ground floor plan. • Social hub is located in north to introduce light without constrains.

  39. Zoning Plan • First floor plan. • Theaters are places in south, to avoid glass openings.

  40. Zoning Plan • Second floor.

  41. Zoning Plan • MRC Area. • A triangle on the floor, people would write on it their experience in the place.

  42. Sections • Through Atrium. • Through MRC.

  43. Elevations • Through Atrium. • To the north, the view to the site is a critical factor. Angulations and stretched shapes are carefully selected. It’s a call for city people to come and explore. • Heating is not a critical issue in the north side, that’s why glass facades were placed generously.

  44. Elevations • Through Atrium. • To the west, the windows are carefully placed for the industrial building, minimized as much as possible.

  45. Elevations • Through Atrium. • To the south, the dialogue is with the city, right angles, small windows aligned. • In fact, introducing glass facades is not suggested because the functions doesn’t require such (theaters).

  46. Elevations • Through Atrium. • Main entrance is located in the east side.

  47. 3d Shots • Main entrance during the daytime. • Main entrance is located in the east side.

  48. 3d Shots • Main entrance at the night. • Main entrance is located in the east side.

  49. 3d Shots • The building is easily read. • Main entrance is located in the east side.

  50. 3d Shots • The building is easily read. • Main entrance is located in the east side.
