  2. The Challenges Facing the Czar -Are you better than Nicholas? • You are Tsar Nicholas II, Emperor of Russia, between 1914-1917 you are faced with many difficult problems. For each one, select which option you think would be best to maintain your power and position in Russia. Colour the relevant circle.

  3. March Revolution (1917) Fine, take my crown. • Czar abdicates (gives up power) • Provisional Government is put into place. • Provisional means limited, it is temporary.

  4. The Provisional Government makes a lot of mistakes. • The Provisional Government stays in World War I – even though everybody wants to get out of the war.

  5. The Provisional Government makes a lot of mistakes. • 2. Army Order #1: Soldiers were allowed to vote one whether or not to follow orders.

  6. The Provisional Government makes a lot of mistakes. • 3. The Provisional Government did NOT give land to the poor peasants in rural areas.

  7. While the Provisional Government is busy doing a poor job…. • Workers and soldiers in the cities formed soviets, or councils that took over local governments.

  9. Ideas of Karl Marx • No private property • Taxed according to pay • Immigrants and rebels could not own property • Government takes care of transportation and communication (post mail and telegrams) • Factories owned by state • Everybody must work • Free and public education for all

  10. Aspects of communism? • People should work to the best of their ability and receive what they need • Means of production should be owned by the whole community – government owns • People think government will start with capitalism, be overthrown to become socialist then overthrown again to become communist • Workers should revolt • No social classes • The economy should be carefully controlled by the government

  12. Vladimir Lenin The Bolsheviks • The Bolsheviks were a revolutionary socialist group. • They plotted against the czar. • Vladimir Lenin led the Bolsheviks.

  13. When the following statements are read out hold up a TRUE or a FALSE card: • Most peasants were illiterate and poor. • The Tsar was an autocrat. • Rasputin was the name of the Tsar. • The secret police was called the OKHRANA. • The Parliament was called the Duma. • The Tsarina went to the Front in the war. • The winter in 1917 was exceptionally bad. • There was a strike in Petrograd in March 1917. • The Tsar was a good commander of the army. • The Tsar agreed to abdicate while sat on a train on the 15th March 1917.
