Protecting Greater Sage-Grouse: Challenges and Planning Strategies for Habitat Conservation

The Greater Sage-Grouse, a key indicator species, faces severe threats as over 50% of its sagebrush habitat has been lost since European settlement. With 44% of remaining essential habitats at risk from energy development and 91% subjected to grazing, the ecosystem is under distress. Furthermore, cheatgrass invasion has rendered much of the sagebrush habitat unsuitable for these birds. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) governs significant portions of this habitat, implementing a planning strategy that includes protective buffers for leks and designations for winter habitat preservation.

  1. The National Greater Sage-Grouse Planning Strategy

  2. Lek: Swedish for “mating place”

  3. 50 % of sagebrush habitat has been lost since European settlement

  4. 44 % of the most important remaining sage-grouse habitat is at risk of energy development

  5. 91 %of sage-grouse habitat is subject to grazing, with profound impacts on the ecosystem

  6. 50 % of sagebrush invaded by cheatgrass, which renders habitat virtually worthless to sage-grouse

  7. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administers approximately half of remaining sagebrush steppe in the American West. Greater sage-grouse range BLM lands

  8. The BLM partitioned the planning strategy into 15 subparts.

  9. 1 of the 15 draft plans would require protective 4-mile lek buffers for oil and gas development

  10. of the 15 draft plans would identify and protect sage-grouse winter habitat 0

  11. % of priority sage-grouse habitat is proposed for special designation 0.1
