Introduction Business Communication • The form of communication between a seller and a buyer. • Business communication evolved as a sub-discipline of business administration in the initial years of 20th century. • It aimed to establish rules for efficient English-medium communication in the business world, and to teach these to who mostly had English as their native language. making, buying, selling, or supplying goods or services for money. Characteristics of Language • Artificial • Language is created by people • It doesn’t exist in isolation or outside the minds of people. • Every symbol is attached to a particular thought or thing called referent. • There is no organic connection between a symbol and its meaning. • People attach meanings to words as they need to and modify these meanings according to changing needs. Characteristics of Language • Restricted • No symbol or word can transmit reality. • Sometimes we don’t find words to express our feelings • To overcome this limiting quality of language, people enliven their communication with non-verbal cues to explain things better. • Abstract • It represents generalized ideas of things or thoughts. • A word may refer different idea in different situation. • Abstractness of language refers to all the possible generalization. Characteristics of Language • Arbitrary • no direct relationship between a word and the idea or object it represents. • People speaking different languages use different words for the same object. • Every language is affected by the culture and society of the place where it is spoken • Creative • Every day a language loses some words and it adds some new words. • A language has property to borrow words from other languages, or directly translate the words, for example: skyscraper – Gaganchumbi, Narendra Kumar, Asst. Characteristics of Language • Redundant • Redundancy refers to repetitive property of language • To make the sentence effective and impressive sometimes we repeat some words. • Recursive • no limit to the potential length of a sentence. e.g. John saw a cat which was chasing a rat which was cutting the mat kept on the verandah of his home which he purchased from the market of C.S.T station while he was going to Khandala…. Importance of Business Communication • In this world every corporate professional is either a buyer or a seller and in the days of online marketing one needs to have a good communicator. • The increasing number of multinational companies has increased the demand of business communication skills. • In this digital age, the instant access and mobility of information need increasing number of workers round the clock and they must respond quickly. • Effective business communication skill of workers facilitates a business towards its rapid growth. Importance of Business Communication • According to a survey by Society for Information Management, business communication skill (oral & written) is among top five most desired skills for new hires. • In this hyperconnected world, work team members need collaboration from the persons in different corner of the world, for this the corporate organization needs efficient workers with good written communication skill. Effective business communication • Use simple and short sentences/paragraphs • Avoid ambiguous wording • Avoid circumlocution • Avoid unnecessary repetition • Avoid superficial courteous expressions • Avoid jargon • Avoid pomposity • Avoid verbosity • Avoid colloquialisms (slang) • Use standard way of writing/format Narendra Kumar, Asst.
