  1. Using the new Dividers for Gap/Crack scintillators and discussion Tile week upgrade session 2013 February 1st François Vazeille • Little summary of the results • Next radiation tests • Production and certification 1

  2. Little summary of the results (See Tile Upgrade meeting 17 June 2011 for details and meetings thereafter) Validation of the ″active base concept″ for HL-LHC offering a non linearity < 0.1%  Luminosity with a safety factor > 10, using 3 transistors and 3 diodes in the 3 last stages. (Tests made with 20 PMTs, 20 passive and 20 active bases: See next slide) 2. Refurbishment and upgrade of the Divider Test Bench able to certify the working of 10 Dividers in a run, including the active components. 2

  3. Validation tests of the concept HV = 700 V Pulse light  PMT output of 1 V Continuous light  currentfrom 0 to 120 µA Tests made using 20 PMTs, 20 old Dividers, 20 new Dividers 1 2 3 19 20 PMT1 PMT2 PMT3  PMT19 PMT20 1 2 3 19 20 For each PMT, systematic comparison of the old Divider and of the new Divider  To wash the possible PMT effects in the study. 3

  4. Transistors Q1, 2, 3 BUT Radiation tests of transistors and diodes still missing. Diodes D1, 2, 3 4

  5. Next radiation tests  First indication • - From Kelbytalk: worst position at the PMT location close to Finger Barrel • about 3 Gy/year at the LHC • At HL-LHC: 3 X 10 (Integrated Luminosity) X 10 (years) = 300 Gy or 30 KRad • without the Safety factors. • Tests made on the LHCb Dividers • [Radiation tests of Preshower electronics components during year 2003, • LHCb 2003-162, CALO, PS (September 26th 2003)] •  on the same HV transistor FMMT458 • - Using Krypton beam at GANIL (France). • - Results for tests up to 87 Krad: • Working kept and no SEL (Single Event Latch-ups).  Promising results … but not following the ATLAS radiation policy. 5

  6.  Next radiation tests fitting the ATLAS policy • On both the transistors and the diodes. • Robust information needed on the last simulations and safety factors • (What are the right ATLAS documents ?) •  To meet the ATLAS experts at CERN the next week. • To take benefit from the AIDA project on various irradiation sites for • neutrons (NIEL), Gammas (TID) and protons (SEL). • Comment: • analog working  SEU (Single Event Upset) not requested • Milestones: June 2013. 6

  7. Production and certification  Number of Dividers ? 4 LB Demonstrators: 4 x 32 (PMTs) = 128 Gap/Crack : 8 (PMTs) x 64 (Modules) x2 (EB) = 1024 10% spares for Gap/Crack: 102 Radiation tests : 66 Already produced : 74  Total of 1250 Dividers. Suite à la discussion ces chiffres vont être repris: probablement les scintillateurs Crack seulement et les Démonstrateurs m dans le LB. • Making: already submitted to several Cies •  Request of production delays and cost estimates of the 3 parts: • PCB, component procurement and implementation, cable connexion. •  Final delivery: milestone November 2013. • Certification • by Clermont-Ferrand in about 2 weeks. 7
