  2. Overview • Appendicitis is the inflammation of the APPENDIX.

  3. Causes and Risk Factors • The appendix may be blocked by: • Feces • A foreign object • A tumor (RARELY)

  4. Symptoms • Symptoms vary but may include: • Pain around the belly button • Reduced appatite • Nausea • Low-grade fever • Chills • Shaking • Constipation • Diarrhea • Vomiting

  5. Signs and Tests • Pain increase as the doctor relieves pressure after gently pressing down on the lower right belly area. • Abdominal CT scan • Abdominal ultrasound • Diagnostic laparoscopy

  6. Treatment • Removal of the appendix (APPENDECTOMY)

  7. Complications • Abnormal connections between abdominal organs or between these organs and the skin surface • Abscesses • Infection of the surgical wound • Peritonitis
