  2. ObjectiveRomans 10: 1 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. • Israelites be saved

  3. Main Audience • Israelites (or the Jews) • Address in verse 1 – “brothers” • He quoted many OT text (Lev 18:5, Deut 30, Isaiah 28:16, Joel 2:32, Isaiah 52:7, Isaiah 53:1, Psalms 19:4, Deut 32:21, Isaiah 65:1-2) • Romans 11:13 a shift towards the gentiles. (Implied that he was not talking to them before that)

  4. Zeal is not enoughRomans 10: 2-3 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.

  5. Two Ways of RighteousnessRomans 10: 4 Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. • End • Climax

  6. Two Ways of RighteousnessRomans 10: 5 - 8 • Obey the Law (Lev 18:5) • Simple belief (Duet 30:11-14)

  7. Obey the LawRomans 10: 5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: ‘The person who does these things will live by them.’ Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord. Lev 18:5

  8. Simple BeliefRomans 10: 6 - 8 But the righteousness that is by faith says: ‘Do not say in your heart, “Who will ascend into heaven?” (that is, to bring Christ down)‘or “Who will descend into the deep?” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? ‘The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,’that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.  It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it. Deut 30:11-14

  9. Two Ways of RighteousnessRomans 10: 5 - 8 • Obey the Law – but no one can perfectly obey the Law • The ONLY option left is simple belief
