Tampere, Finland • Founded 1779 with free trade rights on the banks of Tammerkoski Rapids • First in Finland: paper machine, shoe factory, electric light, attempt to fly, radio broadcasting etc. • First in the world: 1978 bank automat, 1991 GSM phone call, 1994 GSM Data Card, 1999 WAP Server and WLAN • etc.

Tampere today 200.000 inhabitants, two universities and two polytechnics, two technological centres, Nokia biggest private employer Centre of Expertise on: • Mechanical engineering and automation • Knowledge intensive business services • Information technology • Media services • Health care technology • Tourism
