  1. http://geekgirlsnetwork.wordpress.com/2009/06/ Energy Transformations

  2. Let’s Review • What are different types of energy you’ve learned about? • Mechanical energy • Potential energy • Kinetic energy • Solar Energy • Thermal Energy • Sound Energy • Chemical Energy • Light Energy • Nuclear Energy • Electrical Energy http://sciencefair.math.iit.edu/projects/forces/

  3. A Question to Ponder • When energy is used by something, what happens to it? • This happens to be the focus question for your lab, so copy it down on a new page in your science notebook. • Answer the question (make sure you explain WHY you think this). • Share in your groups.

  4. Explore • There are six centers set up around the room. • You will have six minutes at each center to make observations about how energy changes. • You will be expected to identify any forms of energy you see, record any changes (transformation) you can find, and illustrate the items at each center.

  5. What Did You Observe? • Center 1 • Flashlight • Center 2 • Light bulb • Center 3 • Car on a ramp • Center 4 • Blowing on a pinwheel • Center 5 • Candle • Center 6 • Tea kettle http://www.faqs.org/photo-dict/phrase/2751/pinwheel.html

  6. So what really happened here? • When the electrical energy was used by the light bulb, where did it go? Was it destroyed? • When the candle burned and you saw the light energy (because I’m quite certain that none of you actually FELT the heat energy), was energy created? http://www.virtual-meditation.com/meditation_room

  7. The answer is no. • You can’t create energy. • You can’t destroy it, either. • The amount of energy you have before a transformation is the same as what exists after a transformation. • It just changes forms, that’s all.

  8. Let’s take a step back. • Go back to your focus question and read your response to it. • What does happen to energy when it’s used by something? • After looking at your observations, write a claim, supported by evidence. • Share your thinking at your table.

  9. Not Everything is Energy • Are the following examples of energy? Why or why not? • Gasoline • Oil • Are these sources of energy, too? • Candy bar • Sleep • Vitamins http://supplements.guidestobuy.com/baby-kids-care/flintstones-complete-childrens-vitamin-chewable-200-tablets/

  10. Something to Think About • Can we “run out” of energy? • If the gasoline in your parents’ car isn’t energy, and we can’t run out of energy, then what is everyone so panicked about? http://jalopnik.com/320417/gas-hits-five-dollars-a-gallon-in-california-the-end-times-draw-ever-more-near

  11. Where does electrical energy come from? • Let’s watch some short videos to find out: • http://www.teachersdomain.org/asset/ket09_vid_coal/ • http://www.teachersdomain.org/asset/phy03_vid_fission/ • http://www.teachersdomain.org/asset/phy03_vid_hooverelec/
