  3. Project objective « » Expose Francophone intervenors to Essential Skills (ES) so that they can identify them and address them in their interventions. Our common task is to produce summary fact sheets for job titles. We have each identified job titles and must construct our summary fact sheets on the basis of these titles.

  4. First of all…What are ES? Language Skills • Reading Text • Using Documents • Writing • Oral Communication • Numeracy • Thinking Skills • Working with Others • Computer Use • Continuous Learning • Problem Solving • Decision Making • Critical Thinking • Job Task Planning and Organizing • Significant Use of Memory • Finding Information

  5. Contents of the fact sheet to design • Job title • NOC code • Job title description • Job-related requirements • List of dominant skills • Description of the tasks related to these skills • To find out more about the occupation

  6. I teach Essential Skills Fact sheet creation approach

  7. Job title • You offer vocational training programs in your institution and you have already identified job titles for which you want to write fact sheets. • It is important that this be a job title and not a training title. It is the job title that corresponds to a NOC code.

  8. Looking up the NOC code • Starting page of the Index of Titles; http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC/English/NOC/2006/SearchKeywordResult.aspx • Enter a key word to view the job titles proposed by the site. • Choose the one closest to your search. • Read the description and ensure that the description provided conforms to your search, or else try other descriptions. • After identifying the code corresponding to your search, enter it next to the job title. • Make sure to keep the Web link of the targeted job title to cite it at the end of your fact sheet, under the heading “For more information on the occupation”.

  9. Job title description • The NOC page corresponding to the job title contains a description of the work performed by the incumbent. • Repeat this description in one phrase, simplifying the wording.

  10. Job-related requirements • Taken from the “Job Futures” site; http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/fra/qc/emploi_avenir/statistiques_emploi_avenir.shtml • Find the identified NOC code. • Read the description of this job title to ensure that our job title is correctly described. • Find the “Requirements” heading. • Group the different qualifications in a few points. You can list up to 5. • Make sure to keep the Web link of this site to enter it under the heading “For more information on the occupation”.

  11. List of dominant skills • Taken from the Essential Skill Profiles site; http://www10.hrsdc.gc.ca/ES/English/search_occupation_noc.aspx • Enter the identified NOC code on the above Web page. • After the description, the most important Essential Skills are given immediately. • For each of them (there are usually 2 or 3), follow the content of the next slide. • Make sure to keep the Web link of this site to enter it under the heading “For more information on the occupation”.

  12. Description of tasks related to these skills • Taken from the complete ES fact sheet of this position. • Read the information specific to each dominant skill. • Identify at least 3 or 4 tasks that best describe the use of this skill in a work situation. • Indicate the level of complexity of this task, usually recorded in parentheses in the description. For example: (1).

  13. To find out more about the occupation Recopy the websites associated with your position title; * NOC site * Job Futures site * Essential Skills site * or others

  14. Fact sheet examples • Here are 3 examples of fact sheets to design. • Produce your fact sheets in a Word document. • Keep a layout similar to the one proposed • Make sure to identify your websites properly.
