  3. The World Health Organization (WHO) define health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being & not merely the absence of disease or infirmity . • Mental health is more than the absence of mental illness: it is vital to individuals, families and societies.

  4. Mental health is described by WHO as:- A state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community (WHO 2001)

  11. What is mental health • Mental health refers to the maintenance of successful mental activity. This includes maintaining productive daily activities and maintaining fulfilling relationships with others . • It also includes maintaining the abilities to adapt to change and to cope with stresses

  12. CONCEPT OF POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH

  13. A positive attitude toward self • This means an objective view of self, knowing its strengths & limitations & accepting both.

  14. 2. Growth, development & self-actualization: • This entails successful achievement of each developmental task, seeking new growth & new challenges.

  15. 3.Integration :It implies maintaining an equilibrium & balance between various life processes (between what is expressed & what is repressed, between outer & inner conflicts , drives , a regulation of one's emotions & reactions without falling apart.

  16. 4. Autonomy • It refers to the individual's ability to perform in an independent & self-directed manner, & accepting responsibility for the outcomes.

  17. 5. Perception of reality • This means perception of the environment without distortion, as well as the capacity for empathy & social sensitivity.

  18. 6. Environmental mastery • It suggests the ability to achieve a satisfactory role within group, society or environment with a reasonable feeling of controlling his situation.
