Barbados, West Indies:General Information • The eastern most island in the Caribbean • Geography: 430 square kilometres (166 square miles); approximately 25% is coastline • Population: approximately 260,000 “Bajans” including • African descendents • European (primarily British) • Small but vibrant Hindu (India), Arab (Lebanese and Syrian) and Jewish communities. Barbados, West Indies:General Information • Remained under British rule from its first settlement in 1627 to its Independence on November 30, 1966 • More than 70 per cent of the island's 260,000 people are direct descendents from the forced mass Africa migration of the late 1600s and 1700s-the slave trade • The chattel house - a unique feature of Barbados • is one product of the cultural side of sugar. • plantation workers needed houses that were easily assembled and taken down so they could move from plantation to plantation. Program Summary • Required Service-learning placements with either the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Health’s HIV/AIDS program • Total required hours varies by course enrollment • Six credits • Required: MUSC 367 – Music and Culture • Plus ONE of the following • IFST 334 – Experiential Education • UNIV 362 – Experiential Learning (limited to six) • IFST/BAMS 475 – Culture and Privilege Barbados Study Abroad 2007

Program Information: Course Options • Course #1: MUSC 367: Music and Culture – Stefan Walcott, local educator and musician • Required for all students • Course goals: To provide the student with • A basic knowledge of the social and historical factors/entities which impacted on and created Caribbean cultures. • An understanding of specific musical genres created within the Caribbean and how these genres relate to the social actors which created them. • The ability to aurally identify Caribbean musical genres. • An elementary understanding of how popular worldview and markets have impacted on Caribbean indigenous forms. Program Information: Course Options • Course #2 – Option 1 • IFST 334/UNIV 362Experiential Education – Dr. Gaines-Hanks • IFST 334 for FCS/HS only; UNIV 362 limited to 6 • Course requirements: Approximately 40 hours of placement; Placement journal; Reflections; Seminar-format • Course #2 – Option 2 • IFST/BAMS 475: Culture and Privilege – Dr. Grayman • Examines the social structure of privilege and disadvantage within a Caribbean context • Explores the intergenerational transmission of privilege • Includes a series of lectures, readings, class discussion, and an experiential activity (approximately 20 hours) Barbados Study Abroad 2007

Program Information • Program base: St. Michael’s parish (within walking distance of the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill and easily accessible to Bridgetown) • Housing: Paradise Villas, Black Rock • http://www.barbadosapartments.net/index.php • only 220 yards from one of the island's finest beaches. • Apartments are tastefully decorated and have fully equipped kitchens, living/dining rooms and patios. • All the bedrooms are individually air conditioned. • Daily maid service is inclusive.
