  1. Sourcing and Source Driver Status Ianos Schmidt CMS week Sept.2008

  2. Outline • Air Drivers • Air system • HF Source tubes and drivers • Control electronics • Software • Miscellaneous issues

  3. Air drivers HE Air drivers: • All Air drivers installed and tested for proper operation. • Two complete rounds of scans performed on all 432 tubes, and maps of tubes lengths established. • 3 tubes found to be broken. 1 replaced, other two blocked at indexer. • 4 tubes can not be penetrated. HB drivers: • New driver supports produced to accommodate shift in Z of indexer bars from their nominal positions. • All air drivers installed and tested for proper operation. • Two complete rounds of scans performed on all 432 tubes, and maps of tubes lengths established. • 4 tubes can not be penetrated. • 4 tubes may be broken (wire went beyond expected length). • Reel air motor on the HB- near side driver jammed. Motor was replaced. • residue was found in the motor. May have been present before installation, but there is concern that it may have come from the flexible hosed that go between the regulator/filter and the driver. Note that HE has copper pipes.

  4. Air system DONE Filter 20u Lock out valves DONE • All on-detector air panels completed and installed • Need to procure components and prepare panels for Installation in the USC gas room DONE DONE • Hoses between UXC X0 and gas room not installed! • Hoses need to be procured and installed

  5. HF source system. • All drivers installed and tested for proper operation. • Two complete rounds of scans done on all 1152 tubes, and tube length maps established. • No failures or broken tubes. • Wire reached the end of all tubes (few tight ones). Test scan results for wedge 1-10

  6. Control electronics Controller boards: • Crate and panel parts kits procured. • Electronic components procured, except microcontroller chips! • Philips microcontroller out of production. NXP replacement not completely compatible as claimed –poor documentation of changes! Requires some circuit modifications to avoid potential problems with the NXP devices. • Plan to try and procure original Philips devices, but also implement changes for NXP device compatibility. • Boards layouts completed (except for mods for NXP devices) Backplane boards: • Backplane schematics captured, parts list generated, and layout started. To Do: • Produce prototype boards. • Assemble Crates • Build interlock interface. • Need to finalize interconnection of zone safety infrastructure (switches, locks, lights…). *Note: We have prototype boards at CERN for used until production items are available.

  7. Software • Controller code revised when new boards available. • NXP devices require code changes. • Some differences between Philips and NXP devices not properly documented! • XDAQ Software started, and a test stand environment setup on MOE6. Still lots of work for me to do here.

  8. Miscellaneous issues • Storage/transport boxes (2+3+4+3+2 =14 min.): • Lead storage pigs produced and installed in boxes (Old HO RBX boxes). • Need to procure some hardware to complete assembly. • Need wire retaining mechanism to prevent wires from coming out of pigs. • Zone interlocks, access control, safety and procedures: • HCAL responsible for access control interlock, and associated warning lights. • Interlock box specification needs to be established. Fermilab will produce boxes. • Need revised procedures to fully address the requirements and specific implementation in the UXC environment (Pawel).

  9. Info related to damaged tube on HE+ Tip of wire Marks suggest external damage ~3.2mm Driver force limit switch never activated During scan of this tube, therefore force never exceeded ~1.1kg
