  2. Twitter • Micro-blogging site • Launched July 2006 • Over 300 million users • 1.6 billion search queries per day

  3. Pros • Easy to use • Highly interactive. Can contact people directly • Can search all posts on Twitter using key words • “Tweets” are often rebroadcast as “retweets”

  4. Cons • Limited to 140 characters per post • Smaller user base then Facebook • Can’t post videos • Unsure of how much your tweets are being read

  5. Crucial to Young Professionals • 56% of young professionals will not work for a company that bans social media • A third of the students polled valued social media freedom over salary • A third considered the Internet to be as important as air, water, and shelter

  6. Businesses Utilizing Twitter • GM, Ford, Chevy • Airlines & Hotels • Sports teams • ComCast • H&R Block • Whole Foods Market , Starbucks

  7. Why They Use Twitter • Connecting with customers • Branding • Immediate customer feedback • Marketing • News • Spy on competition • Twitter is viral

  8. How it relates to Young Professionals • Using twitter to your advantage • Keep your pulse on a specific area of interest • Access to resources and job information

  9. Effects of Twitter • If used in the right way, twitter can be extremely beneficial • Provides endless opportunities to connect to businesses • Can market yourself in a positive way

  10. When Twitter can hurt • RMV employee fired because of “nasty rant” on twitter • LVDEC employee fired when she suggested in a post that colleagues leave work early to golf • Twitter leads 3 congressmen to be fired

  11. Twitter: Positive Resource • All in all, Twitter is positive social media IF used the right way • Can easily get out of hand and be detrimental to young professionals

  12. Blogs • Formally Weblogs • Written by one person or small group on a single topic • Traditionally link-driven • Allows for filtering • More recently blog publishing servers are used • Completely public

The Con: Natalie Munroe • Teacher at Central Bucks East High School • Wrote blog she thought was private • "A complete and utter jerk in all ways” • “Although academically okay your child has no other redeeming qualities” • "I hear the trash company is hiring” • "There's no other way to say this, I hate your kid.
