Solar Image Recognition WorkshopSummary & Conclusions Bob Bentley UCL
Several spatial and temporal regimes • Small scale phenomena • Small scale, restricted FOV, short lifetimes • Bright points, transient brightenings, granules… • Generally, analysis restricted to limited time intervals • Concern over coverage, etc. – hard to construct catalogs • “Global” Phenomena • Medium/large scale, whole/extended sun, longer lifetimes • Typically described features • Spots, filaments, CH, AR… – slow evolution • CMEs, filament eruptions… – rapid evolution • Scope for coordinated effort to develop tools and catalogs • Outriders • Poorly described, few observations… • Trans equatorial loops, sigmoids?,active regions?, others??
To coordinate things we need to: • Adopt understood/common way of preparing, correcting and enhancing the data prior to recognition • Examine carefully whether techniques giving the same results • Consider how to “normalize” results • Use different wavelengths to confirm/provide information • Think about more formal definitions of features • Consider if we should create new indices • Related in some way to existing indices • Agree on ways of describing features in catalogs • Describe how data treated, etc… • Issues related to coordinates, etc. (helio, pixel…) • Must be able to handle annotation • Magnetic field strength of spots; classification of spots and Ars • Barbs on filaments • Structure of CMEs and velocity • AR structure, etc… – ARM???? • EGSO discussion document on this and related issues out shortly
Other things… • Use of information • Many techniques designed to recognize and classify features • Some designed to detect change • Both could be used for Space Weather if appropriate information is available • Need to decide what we need • Need discussion to ensure what is being derived is of use • Folding things like ARM into the VO effort • QLK/Web service interface • Metadata, registry?? (JTM?)
Also… • Sharing Software • Special branch for feature recognition in SSW • Related mainly to medium/ large scale features? • What about software for very small scale features?? • Submission procedure – issues related to quality • Next Solar Image Recognition Workshop??
