  1. Certification Tool SetRadar Processing Boxes 2 & 3 Robert Neece & Phil Schaffner NASA Langley Research Center September 2002

  2. Certification Methodology • 1) Turbulence Events/Scenarios • Enough events? • Domain size/number of scatterers • Roles of von Karman and cloud models • V&V of cloud model • Model reflectivity vs radar reflectivity • Time evolution? • 2) Radar Simulation • Phase modulation? • ADWRS / other v&v • Radar scenarios (see description of “Radar Truth field” output) • 3) Radar Algorithm* • NASA standard algorithm • Moment estimate field on radar grid • Load estimate field on radar grid wind field reflectivity I & Q *Vendor equipment/ products will replace this block • 4) Aircraft Specific Test Criteria • Weight • Type • Speed wind altitude Box 2 Radar Simulation Box 3 Turbulence Detection Algorithm Estimated loads on radar grid • 5) Aircraft “Truth” Fields • Domain size (1, 2, 3-D) • Technique for producing truth • Aircraft type/configuration; generic vs. actual* • sDherrors due to parameter uncertainty (e.g., weight) • *NASA task 2 as defined at OKC meeting 05/01 • 6) Comparative Analysis & Statistics • Flight deck issues • Polar to Cartesian conversion • Hit/miss scoring rules Estimated loads on Wx model grid

  3. Box 2 Functions • ADWRS (Airborne Doppler Weather Radar Simulation) Accepts pre-processed atmospheric data from TPAWS data sets. • u, v, w wind velocities • Radar reflectivity • ADWRS GUI accepts user input of radar simulation parameters. • Integration parameters & processing options • Weather and clutter • Output selections • Radar parameters • Antenna parameters • Aircraft path

  4. Box 2 Functions • ADWRS Radar simulation generates I&Q and other products • Generates output file for post-processing in Box 3 • Includes simulated real-time data with all radar and aircraft data • Based on the NASA B-757 environment • Generates user files • I&Q • Spectra • Tabulated ASCII data

  5. Radar Simulation, Box 2 User Inputs TPAWS Atmospheric Data Set ADWRS 5.1 Radar Simulation GUI Output file for post-processing u ADWRS Pre-processor v ASCII User Files w I&Q dBZ RRF Spectra Airborne Doppler Weather Radar Simulation

  6. ADWRS GUI • Allows entry of configuration parameters without risk of formatting errors. • Provides default values when no specific value is entered.

  7. ADWRS GUI

  8. Box 3, Detection Algorithm • Real-time detection algorithm embedded in wrapper software that • Allows real-time algorithm to be used in simulation environment • Reads previously-generated ADWRS output file • Does data interpretation and scaling • Hazard detection is done by a real-time algorithm • Works with Baseline (RTI) and NESPA (NCAR Efficient Spectral Processing Algorithm) implementations (PostProcB and PostProcNESPA) • Adaptable to others • Calculates second moments • References hazard tables to make aircraft-dependent g-load predictions

  9. Box 3 Elements PostProcB or PostProcNESPA Shared Memory Data Interpretation and Scaling Hazard Detection and Estimation User Interface Display S/W ADWRS Data File Aircraft- Dependent Hazard Tables Hazard Processing RadarUI

  10. Display Screen Shot

  11. Availability • Box 2: Radar simulation distributed • ADWRS 5.1 • ADWRS Pre-processor • Sample files • Manuals and ReadMe documents • Box 3: Turbulence Detection Algorithm • Post-processing based on Baseline and NESPA demonstrated • Display program, RadarUI, used in real time and post-processing

  12. Summary • The ADWRS radar simulation was adapted for use in the Certification Tool Set, Box 2. • Reads TPAWS atmospheric data files • Accepts flight and aircraft-dependent parameters • Provides output information that is equivalent to real-time • Two turbulence detection algorithms have been implemented in Box 3. • Uses real-time algorithms • Adaptable to other algorithms
