  2. Edgar Allan Poe Born on : Jan 19, 1809 Died on: Oct 7, 1849 http://edgar-allan-poe.book-lover.com/

  3. 5 Short Stories and 5 Poems 5 STORIES “The Angel of the Odd” “Berenice” “The Cask of the Amontillado” “The Gold Bug” “Hop-Frog” 5 POEMS • “Alone” • “The Bells” • “The City in the Sea” • “Eldorado” • “The Raven”

  4. Biography Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809. His mother died when he was 2 years old. Edgar went to the University of Virginia in 1826 when he was 17. A year later he quit school and joined the U.S Army. He did well and went to West Point in 1830. He got kicked out of the academy on purpose. In 1835 Poe became the editor of a newspaper because he won a contest with his story “The Manuscript Found in a Bottle". In 1836 he married his cousin Virginia, who was 13 at the time. When Edgar was the editor of Graham’s Magazine in 1840,it went from making 5,000 copies to making 35,00o copies. In 1843 he wrote “The Gold Bug” and made 100 dollars off of it.

  5. Biography (Cont.) Even though “The Gold Bug” had 300,000 copies in circulation, Poe was still making little money. His wife Virginia died in 1847, causing him great stress. In 1849, he left New York and went to Philadelphia. He joined “The Sons of Temperance” to stop drinking. On September 30, 1849 he got on a wrong train and ended up in Baltimore. On Oct. 3 he was found at Gunnar's Hall and was transported to a hospital. He died on Oct. 7 from unknown reasons.

  6. Poe’s Death I think that his death was caused by alcohol. He had a long history of drinking heavily. Drinking is extremely unhealthy if you drink that much. He had other illnesses that drinking may have worsened and contributed to his death.

  7. Favorite Poe Story My favorite Poe story by far is “The Masque of the Red Death”. The way he uses imagery to describe the clock and the rooms is clever. The color symbolism is interesting to. When the prince runs from the easternmost room to the westernmost room it represents life. When he starts out, that means birth, and when reaches the last room, it is death. He dies in the last room(It represents death)and so do all of the guests. I find that very creative in a creepy way.

  8. Favorite Story (Cont.) I think it is great the way he uses suspense when the clock is ticking. It’s also suspenseful when the cloaked figure is moving through the rooms. You don’t know what he’s going to do when he reaches the last room. “The Masque of the Red Death” is a well written story filled with suspense and symbolism.

  9. Conclusion Poe is like the father of modern day horror because he was one of the first to write true horror story's. The figurative language paints a picture in your head. His books are filled with suspense. I made connections to his story's with modern day horror books. I enjoyed Poe’s story’s. The suspense adds to the quality of the story. The plots are clear and the language makes it very interesting.
