Explore the fundamentals of atomic theory and discover what matter is composed of—atoms! Learn about the three subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons, including their charges and relative masses. Understand the neutrality of atoms, the structure of the atom, and where to find each particle within it. Delve into the areas of the atom, including the nucleus and electron cloud, and visualize the atomic structure through the Bohr model. This overview will enhance your understanding of the microscopic world of atoms.

  1. ATOMIC THEORY REVIEW

  2. What is ALL matter made of? ATOMS !!! What are the 3 subatomic particles? Protons, neutrons, & electrons!!!

  3. What are the charges of the subatomic particles? p (+) positive n (0) neutral e (-) negative We know that there are the same number of p+ and e- in atoms on the Periodic Table… So What is the overall charge of those atoms? NEUTRAL… the positive charge cancels out the negative charge = 0!!!

  4. What are the masses (amu) of the subatomic particles? p+ = 1 n = 1 e- = 0 What is this AMU stuff????? Atomic mass unit 2.2 lbs= 1 kg 1.66 x 10-27 kg = 1 amu

  5. What are the two areas of an atom? Nucleus and electron cloud

  6. Where are the p+, n, and e- located in an atom? p+ in nucleus n in nucleus e- in electron cloud

  7. Where is most of the volume of an atom located? Where is ALL the mass in an atom located? Nucleus Electron Cloud

  8. What does a Bohr model of the atom look like? The nucleus contains the p+ and n… while the electrons “orbit” the nucleus in the energy rings of the e- cloud.

  9. Inventory Practice 1. Mg 2. Mo 3. Ag 4. Au 5. La
