  2. Objectives • To be able to outline the basic requirements for unit 14 • To identify 3 sources of information to assist your research.

Introduction • By the end of this unit, you will be able to: • Understand thenature of physiological disorders, • Knowthe processes involved in the diagnosis of physiological disorders, • Produce care pathways for physiological disorders, • Understand thestrategies used to support individuals with physiological disorders.

  4. What will this unit be about ? • How physiological disorders might affect an individuals life and development? • How diseases are caused, diagnosed and treated ? • How care is provided by various key professional to those with physiological disorders?

  5. Can you remember what ‘Physiology’ Means? • Thebranchofbiologydealing with the functions and activities of living organisms and their parts, including all physical and chemicalprocesses.

  6. What are Physiological Disorders? • Condition caused by a malfunction of body organs. They are not generally caused by infection, although it is not always clear how a physiological disorder is caused.

  7. Examples of Physiological Disorders • Diabetes • Coronary heart disease • Stroke – (cerebral vascular accident) • Parkinson’s disease • Alzheimer’s disease • Motor neurone disease • Multiple sclerosis • Rheumatoid or Osteoarthritis (they are different) • Crohn’s disease • IBS • Cancers • Deficiency diseases There are many more ………………………………………………………..

  8. Assessment • You will be researching two different physiological disorders – This will mostly be independent research. • You will choose the disorders which you research BUT be aware that the whole unit will be based around those 2 disorders. So choose something you are interested in! • You should not choose disorders which are similar to each other. • Ensure that there is plenty of information available about each disorder.

  9. When you are choosing what disorders to study you must bear in mind you will need to be able to find sufficient information to meet all criteria!

  10. Where to find information….. • Library – journals, books, leaflets etc. Ask librarians for help! • Health/ social care settings – GP surgery, health centres, your placement. • Primary resources – but remember confidentiality. • Internet – Avoid WIKI ! Do not copy and paste! Use reliable sites !

  11. Homework • Begin your research! Looking at the list of disorders on this power point find out some initial information on the nature/ signs and symptoms of 2 disorders. Bring notes to class to discuss - This is initial research to help you decide which disorders you would like to study. Remember to keep all references for bibliography and future reference.
