  1. Non US involvement in the Vietnam war By Brandon Hunter aka Lelouch Vi. Britannia

  2. What was the Vietnam war?(AND WHO WAS PHONE!?!?!?) • That’s elementary my dear Watson it was a war. • More precisely it was a prolonged struggle to prevent the spread of communism • Altogether the Vietnam war lasted roughly 30 years, including the scuffle that the French was involved in.

  3. Background info(Or how this mess was already in motion) • There was already been fighting in Vietnam, there wasn’t just a “Heeeeey guis let’s start a war mkaaay?” There were already some serious issues happening with Vietnam. • Vietnam was rarely a dependent country, they seemed to have been dominated rather frequently by other foreign powers. • First of all Vietnam was under French’s rule for quite a while, starting from France’s colonial period.

  4. Background info pt. 2 (return of the ground) • So basically Japan comes all like BOOM!!! • In other words Japan started to invade parts of Vietnam in1940. • By 1941 Vietnam had two different countries occupying it. Japan

  5. Ho Chi Minh enters the fray(Or the wandering monk returns) • After spending 30 years walking the Earth Ho Chi Minh decides to return to Vietnam. • When he returned Ho Chi Minh went to work while operating in China. • Ho Chi Minh establishes the Viet Minh (presumably named after himself and Vietnam.)

  6. The Viet Minh(Winter is coming) • It was originally founded in China, it was primarily run by communists but it was open to people with different political beliefs. • The full name was known as Viet Nam Doc Lap Dong Minh Hoi. • In English this translates to League for the Independence of Vietnam . • The Viet Minh as it’s name implies was to grant Vietnam idependence, in order to do this it attempted to kick out foreign powers from Vietnam.

  7. Viet Minh Cont.(Attack on titan) • In 1943 general Vo Nguyen Giap infiltrated North Vietnam, and uses Guerilla tactics against the Japanese who occupied there. • The Viet Minh troops were gaining more and more territory. • After the Japan surrendered to the allies the Viet Minh troops took control of Hanoi. • They later proclaimed that they were the independent Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

  8. The French response(The French gets ber mad init?) • At first the French decides to recognize the new Vietnamese government. • They then decided “Whoa whoa whoa, why on zis Erf shall we give up de colony? Hawhawhaw” And so they fought. • Ho Chi Minh pleads with ‘MURRICA to help them against the French, and since he supplied them with info on the Japanese in WWII he thought that they would surely lend a hand. • ‘Murrica says “nop cus containment brah, gotta keep y’all commies where you is.” Since America is afraid of the domino affect, which in layman terms is the idea that if Vietnam falls to communism then the rest of Asia would follow suit. (Talk about 0 faith).

  9. France backs down(France gets ber shook init?) • Despite France getting U.S support, their adc carry skills just wasn’t stronk enough and they decided tio do what they do best… surrender at 20. • In other words after getting wrecked at Dien Bien Phu, they decided to drop out in 1954.

  10. Geneva Conference(Jehovah Witness wuuuuut?) • A meeting was gathered to discuss how the French could peacefully withdraw from Vietnam. • Everyone decided that the Geneva accords would be used. • The Geneva accords stipulated a cease fire, and a peaceful withdrawal. • It also drew a temporary line along the 17th parallel, dividing communist north and non communist south

  11. Not to be confused with Korea’s 38th parallel The 17th Parallel

  12. Soviet Union’s involvement(sketchy details for a sketchy government) • The Soviets acted like some sort of mediator during the war, trying to negotiate peace. • They also were the primary supplier to Vietnam economy wise, and military wise. ^ lul wut? • The sovies also decided it would be lolsy to set up propaganda showing how bad the Americans are, and how Vietnam was right in fighting against capitalism.

  13. Effects on the Vietnamese(How war… War never changes) • The effects were rather devastating, large amounts to damage to property (being a defensive was and all). • Chemical weapons such as agent orange caused large scale dame. • Many of the bombs dropped didn’t go off causing problems in the future. • Anti-personal mines were dropped by the thousands, also causing future problems. • Many people lost their homes, and some innocents suffered from PTSD. Huehuehuehue. • Oh yeah, and thousands of people died and lost family members.
