  3. Midterm announcement • Let’s look over this handout. • Please record in your agendas when this happen. • Your first item to prepare is tonight’s homework to complete the review sheet on Review of Government, due next class.

  14. MILITARISM • Military build-up by neighboring countries that cause tensions. • By 1914, Europe was an armed camp that was ready to explode.

  15. ALLIANCES • Alliances in Europe were often secret. This increased tensions. • Friends one year - enemies the next.

  16. IMPERIALISM • European countries scrambled for colonies in Africa and Asia. • Countries fought for land & power

  17. NATIONALISM • People of Europe united by common language and culture. • Love of Country - very important Italy England Germany France Austria

KILLED 128 Americans • Americans regarded the attack as an act of terrorism, not war/ Others said that the passengers traveling on ships of foreign nations did so at their own risk • President Wilson said the U.S. was “too proud to fight” • Sussex Pledge- Germany & U.S. meeting, Germany promised, with certain conditions, to sink no more merchant ships without warning

  24. ZIMMERMANN TELEGRAM • Jan. 1917- Arthur Zimmermann sent a telegram to the German ambassador in Mexico (intercepted by Britain) • If Mexico attacked the U.S. if they entered the war in Europe, when Germany won WWI, Germany would give Mexico back land they had lost to the U.S.
