1. Title Slide • Include the Title of your Presentation • Include your name and affiliation (Your University/Organisation) • Include your e-mail address • Acknowledgements: indicate support of research grants, assistance with preparation of presentation etc.
2. Outline • Make your 1st or 2nd slide an outline of your presentation • Follow the order of your outline for the rest of the presentation • Only place main points on the outline slide • Example: Use the main points from your “Contents Guide” slide as the title for any subsequent slides
3. Slide Structure • Use a maximum of 1-2 slides per minute of your presentation • Use point form, do not try to include the entire text of your paper in your slides. • Include a maximum 4-5 bullet points per slide • Avoid too many words: use key words and phrases only with the exception of important quotations.
3. Slide Structure • Show one point at a time: • Will help audience concentrate on what you are saying • Will prevent audience from reading ahead • Will help you keep your presentation focused
4. Fonts • Use at least 20-point font • Use different size fonts for main points and secondary points • Use a standard font like Times New Roman or Arial
5. Slide Colour • Use a colour of font that contrasts sharply with the background • Example: white font on blue background • Use colour to emphasize a point • But only use this occasionally
6. Images • Use images to enhance your presentation • Use good quality images and relate them to your key points • Images are particularly useful to illustrate people or places that may be unknown to an international audience
7. Spelling and Grammar • Proof your slides for: • Correct spelling • Repeated words • Grammatical errors • For ISSA conferences, if English is not your first language, please have someone else check your presentation!
8. Conclusion • Use an effective and strong closing • Your audience is likely to remember your last words • Use a conclusion slide to: • Summarize the main points of your presentation • Suggest future avenues of research
