  1. WHAT STRATEGIES AND ACTIVITIES ARE NECESSARY FOR SOUTH AFRICA TO PROMOTE, PROTECT AND SUPPORT BREASTFEEDING TRACK 2: HEALTH SERVICES RECOMMENDATIONS TO BETTER PROMOTE, PROTECT AND SUPPORT BF: ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIONS

OBJECTIVE 3 • Looking at the constraints and barriers in the health services( programme strategies) what can be done to overcome these in concrete steps SOLUTIONS * Train and skill birth attendance (Home Deliveries and feeding practices) * Involve CBO’s, NGO’s and TAC * The need for Community health workers – and recommend tasks and responsibilities (child health priorities) * Pregnant mothers taught on emergency care * Involve private sector in all matter pertaining to IYCF facilities * Advocacy and responsibility of BF Messages * Fill in vacant posts * Bathopele principles be integrated in our training * Providing an enabling environment( MBFHI)

OBJECTIVE 3 • Looking at the constraints and barriers in the health services( programme strategies) what can be done to overcome these in concrete steps SOLUTIONS * Look at and improve working conditions of HCW(Private v/s Public) * Multi-disciplinary approach * Fast tracking PHC re-engineering * Using mass media to promote breastfeeding * IEC Marketing * Training of more health care workers (HR Structure) * Mainstreaming breastfeeding (Dept of Education) * Address stigma * Human Milk Banks * Capturing data (M & E)

  4. OBJECTIVE 4 • Define the levels of responsibilities within health services and articulate what tasks and roles are required by various players. 4.POLICY DEVELOPMENT * NDOH 2. FOLLOW –UP RESEARCH & ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS e.g MRC 3. TRAINING * NDOH in consultation with Provinces and districts: To Develop training and IEC material * Standardize all training material * Develop core messages Involve other stakeholders – Private Hospital - Partners

  5. OBJECTIVE 4 • Define the levels of responsibilities within health services and articulate what tasks and roles are required by various players. 1.MONITORING AND EVALUATION * Recommendation of new indicators – NDOH and Provinces * Core indicators must be included into the DHIS
