  2. Organization Overview • Started in 1991 by Rajarshi and Victor Bansiwar • Dedicated staff of 14 teachers • Reach out to children working in railway stations • MISSION: To provide opportunities to these children to realize their dreams and ambitions

  3. Background • There are over 250,000 street children in Mumbai • Rag pickers, shoe shine boys, coolies, flower sellers, beggars etc. • Potential limited only by education, love and the opportunities they recieve • Attempts to “reform” them through remand homes is a lost cause

  4. A Solution? • Don’t wait for the children to come seeking reform • REACH OUT TO WORK WITH AND AMONGST THEM

  5. VOICE personnel go to the railway stations and informally talk to the children, share their concerns, and over time, try to win over their confidence

  6. Implementation • Classes are held on platforms at Andheri, Bandra, Dadar, and Vile Parle stations in Mumbai and at Pumphouse in Andheri East • VOICE believes that education goes beyond literacy, beyond book learning… • Emphasize non formal education – development of mind, body and soul

  7. Education • Teach the three R’s • Languages – Hindi, English • Computer literacy • Vocational training - tailoring, painting, making stationery, diya-making, screen-printing • Enrich learning through songs, games, stories, and dramatics • Field trips – Delhi, Agra etc.
