  3. Why is family so important? • A person’s relationship with their family molds their future relationships with others. • If the relationships with family members are healthy, a child learns to love, respect, and get along with others and to function as a part of a group. • Families share traditions, values, and views on relationships of its cultural group.

  4. What are some traditions or values you would like to keep within your own family? • Brain storm for a few minutes and think of some traditions, values or beliefs you would like to keep within your own family. • Make some notes addressing these issues.

  5. Families are changing • More woman in the work force- 50% of all mothers with preschool children are working. Why? • High divorce rate- No fault divorce makes it easier to get a divorce. Divorce causes families to adjust to many things. What are some things they must get adjusted to? • Postponing marriage- This creates smaller families. Average woman now has 2 children while in 1950 women averaged between 3 and 4.

  6. Family forms • Find a partner. • Each pair will be assigned a section to review and present. • Remember: be courteous when other groups present, make the presentation interactive, and have fun! • This section notes will not be supplied, so it is important to take notes on this section as other groups present.

  7. Responsibilities • Adult responsibilities- The heads of families are responsible for providing the basic needs for the children. (food, clothing, shelter, education, health care, security, and love) They also teach their children about socialization. • Children’s responsibilities- Odd jobs around the house and school. • Shared responsibilities- Sometimes chores are alternated between individuals in a family.

  8. Family Stress • Illness- Everyone worries. People may feel ignored then feel guilty for thinking of themselves. • Financial Problems- adults feel guilty they cannot provide, children can feel angry that they must go on without things friends have. • Separation or divorce- A separation is when a couple lives apart and tries to work out their problems. If ends in divorce, people may feel like failures and suffer from grief and loss. Children may feel helpless, resentment, guilt, sadness, anger or embarrassment.

  9. Drug Abuse • Effects every family member • Family may feel worried or embarrassed or scared to bring friends around the home • Help groups are around. Look under “Drug abuse” in your phone book or search online.

  10. Family Violence • Domestic Abuse- Abuse of one spouse to another. • Physical Abuse- Intentionally causing physical harm to another person -Victims may feel responsible - They believe they can figure out the right way to behave - The only person who is truly responsible is the abuser

  11. Sexual abuse- Typically the adult abuser is someone the child knows well. Even one single encounter of sexual abuse can have a devastating effect on a child. Victims of sexual abuse should talk with a trusted adult or call the child Abuse Hotline. • Emotional Abuse- Nonphysical mistreatment of a person. Emotional abuse does not leave physical scars but can have drastic emotional effects to an individual. • Neglect- When a parent or guardian fails to provide physical and emotional needs of a child.

  12. Run Aways • Reasons: Violence, abuse, neglect, or arguments • Kids who run away from home have a higher rate of becoming ill and turning to crime. They become easy targets for people who are involved in prostitution, pornography, and drugs. • Help: Shelters and hotlines.

  13. Time Management • What is time management? • Time management is your ability to manage your schedule. • Why is this important? • Pg 68

  14. Scenarios • 1. You are at college and have three classes. One is from 8:00 am-9:30 am, 12:15pm-1:45pm, and 6:30pm-9:00 pm. It takes 10 minutes to get to your classes from your dorm. You must find time to finish a project, work out, eat three meals and a snack, read 2 chapters of history, and also have time for yourself. Create a schedule for this day to show how you plan to achieve this.

  15. 2. You are a parent who works from 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Your child must be at their baseball game at 5:45. It will take exactly 35 minutes to pick the child up from school and get them to their baseball game. The child has to eat before the game and has homework to do by tomorrow. It will be around 8:15 pm by the time the child is home and he likes to go to bed by 9:00 or he is cranky. The child has about an hour and a half of homework that he needs your help with. How will this child to eat, do his homework, and get enough sleep for tomorrow?
