  2. Allies with native americans • French colonists traded and allied with Indian tribes – Algonquian and Huron. • English colonists traded and allied with Iroquios. • Many Indians trusted the French more than they did the English.

  3. Conflicts with the American indians • A Native American leader called Metacomet began to dislike the English colonists. People began calling him King Phillip because he compared himself to King Charles. • Tensions finally erupted into a conflict called “King Phillip’s War.”

Conflicts with france • France and England each wanted control over Europe and North America. • This conflict causes a series of wars between the two countries. • The French built three forts in the Ohio Valley to protect the trade with the Native Americans. • The British colonist felt that the French were keeping them from expanding into the West.

  5. A hope for unity • Benjamin Franklin helped write the Albany Plan of Union • This called for the colonies to unite. • Colonies rejected the Albany Plan, as did Parliament.

French and indian war • While delegates met in Albany, the British began building a fort along the Ohio River. • A young soldier, George Washington made a name for himself during the war. • The turning point of the war came when British troops took Quebec, the capital of New France. • The Native Americans fought for both sides depending on trade and alliances. • Treaty of Paris – ended the war and gained French lands east of Mississippi

  7. consequences • Conflicts over the newly acquired land in the Ohio River valley with the Native Americans • This led to Britain refusing to let colonists settle west of the Appalachian Mountains – Proclamation of 1763 • Britain had an enormous debt left over from the war. • This caused Britain to try to make money from the colonists
