In this project, students will explore the solar system by designing models that illustrate either the geocentric or heliocentric theories. Over two days, teams will research an astronomer, create a PowerPoint presentation, and produce a visual model of the solar system. Each group will include key information such as the astronomer's name, interesting facts, and a written description of their model. This hands-on approach will help deepen understanding of planetary orbits and the structure of our solar system.

Warm-up • Draw what you think our solar system looks like • Make sure to label the names of the planets and draw their orbits
What is a model? • Simplification of reality • Helps us to better understand something in nature • Ex: models of the atom
Geocentric • An astronomical theory that the earth is the center of the universe
Heliocentric Astronomical theory that the earth and the planets revolve around the sun Comes from greek; Helios = sun Kentron = Center
Solar System Model Project • Two Days to Complete • Day 1: Research Scientist • Day 2: Create and Turn in Powerpoint
Information Needed • Astronomers Name: • Picture of Astronomer: • Interesting Fact or Story about Astronomer • Date • Place • Model • Geocentric or Heliocentric • Written Description of Model • Picture of the Model
