  1. Moving Databases from Oracle to Amazon S3

  2. In today’s data driven business environment, it is necessary for enterprises to rely on technologically advanced computing and storage platforms to maximize their needs. The database solutions should be safe and secure with guaranteed data durability and unlimited storage and computing facilities.

  3. Why would enterprises opt to migrate databases from Oracle to S3? Oracle is a Relational Database Management System mainly used for Online Transaction Processing and data warehousing. Most applications merge seamlessly into the Oracle database as it supports both GNU/LINUX and Windows Server. Very importantly, data safety and security is assured as Oracle is ACID-compliant.  Amazon S3 is a cloud-based data warehousing solution and is ideal for Online Analytical Processing. An application is launched on S3 by first initiating API calls and then connecting to an S3 interface through the AWS Management Console. While moving databases from Oracle to S3, what most organizations consider is the high level of data durability, scalability, and performance of S3.

  4. Optimizing Database Oracle to S3 S3 increases the efficiencies of Oracle databases as moving to S3 reduces the payouts to Oracle.   Here are three ways to maximize efficiency of Oracle databases on S3. · In on-premises Oracle databases, run EC2 compute instances and EBS storage. Once completed, the existing servers and storage should be replaced with AWS S3 infrastructure. · Shift on-premises Oracle database to Amazon Relational Database Service which is a managed database service for Oracle and other popular platforms. It helps reduce many management tasks of Oracle when operating on the AWS infrastructure. · Amazon Aurora is not a precise replacement for Oracle but has many critical features that are designed and optimized for the cloud infrastructure. Organizations looking to migrate databases to the cloud should opt for this platform. Incidentally, Amazon is also migrating to Aurora.  Ensure that the choice made maximizes the organizational requirements.

  5. Migrating On-Premise Database Oracle to S3 Cloud There are two processes to migrate database Oracle to S3 which is transferring on-premise data from Oracle to the cloud.  · Importing data, Oracle Data Pump, and Database Link – Here, the Oracle Data Pump along with the Oracle DBMS_FILE_TRANSFER package are used to connect to a source Oracle instance. It can either be through an Amazon RDS for Oracle database instance or an Amazon EC2 instance. The Oracle data is exported to a dump file with the DBMS_DATAPUMP package and the file copied to the Amazon RDS Oracle DB instance.  · Importing Data, Oracle Data Pump, and Amazon S3 Bucket – The Oracle source data is exported using the Oracle DBMS_DATAPUMP package and the file is dumped in an Amazon S3 bucket. This file is downloaded to the DATA_PUMP_DIR directory in the RDS Oracle DB instance and then the data in the dump file is imported and copied to the Amazon RDS Oracle DB instance.   Choosing the right method is critical for data migration from database Oracle to S3.
