  14. Tips for Successful Proposals • Write for your audience • Members of the committee are NOT in your field • Explain abbreviations, "simple" concepts and terms • Don't assume we understand the value of your proposal - explain!

  15. Tips for Successful Proposals • Write well and convincingly • Grammar counts (so does spelling) • Use references for validation • SELL your proposal • Strive for clarity and organization

  16. Tips for Successful Proposals • Justify your money • Include all budget requirements • Make us believe that this would be money well-spent • Do your homework. Make sure your costs are reasonable

  17. Tips for Unsuccessful Proposals • Miss the deadline • Ignore the guidelines • Don’t get Dept. Head and Dean approval for release time • Don’t get institutional approval (animal care, human subjects) • Don’t include final report from previous work

  18. Submitting the Proposal • Grants Office • 401 Cohodas (Continuing Education) • 12paper copies required • Deadline: November 1

  19. FGC Review Process • Each proposal read by all Faculty Grant Committee members • Lead reviewer provides summary and analysis of strength and weaknesses • Discussion • Two part ranking process

Review Process • How will you know if you have been successful? • Dec 15 - FGC makes recommendations to Senate • You will get a letter indicating your ranking • Does not tell you if you are funded or not! • February 1 - Senate makes recommendations to Provost/VPAA • March 1 - Provost/VPAA announces awards • Now you find out if you definitely get the money or not
