Why is there a war in the first place • The Persian Empire is the main power in 494 BCE • The Ionians are treated poorly by the Persians, so they revolt • Athens wants to control the Aegean Sea, so they help out the Ionians Click me The Persian Empire is large and in charge The Athenians want this! The Ionians want help

  4. Athens and Sparta Unite! Click Here • The Persians (Darius I) are VERY upset with the Athenians (and all Greeks) so they attack the Greek mainland! • The Athenians and Spartans join together to fights the Persian Empire • The Athenians have a navy • The Spartans have an army

Persian War Part One (490 BCE) Click Here • Darius I of the Persian Empire launches an attack on Greece from the Aegean Sea • At the Battle of Marathon, the Greek army is in trouble, but they attack after learning that there is no Persian Cavalry • The Greeks outmaneuver the Persians and the Persians panic, fleeing to their boats • This is the first time that the Greek know they can beat the Persians

  6. Persian War Part Two (480 BCE) Click Here • The Persians (Xerxes) attack the Spartans at Thermopile. The Spartans hold using the Phalanx but are eventually defeated • The Persians burn Athens, but only after the city is evacuated (thanks Spartans) • The Athenian Navy wipes out the Persian Navy at Salamis using the pincer technique

The effects of the Persian Wars Click Here • The Persians are longer a threat to Hellenic Greece • Greeks control the Aegean Sea • Greeks form the Dalian League (defense pact against future Persian aggression – but is it really needed?) • Athenian independence is preserved and government/cultural innovation continue

Pericles – picks up the pieces of a burned out Athens Click Here • Pericles was a military hero and leading statesman who dominated Athenian life from 460 BCE/BC to 429 BCE/BC • Pericles fostered the expansion of Athenian democracy • most adult males could now vote and were paid for their services • Failure to participate led to banishment for non-participation (ostracized) • Pericles’s funeral oration focused on Athenian democracy and further civic duty • Athens and the Parthenon were rebuilt under his rule • Greek culture flowered under his rule
