The Italian PeninsulaAll roads lead to “Roma” Click me • Rome starts and is centered on the Italian Peninsula (modern Italy - “the boot”) • Rome is protected to the north by the Alps Mountains • Italy has two river valleys in which to grow: (1) the Po River and (2) the Tiber River • Rome is surrounded by water (the Mediterranean)

The five major advantages for Roman civilization(location, location, location!) • The central location of Italian peninsula in the western Mediterranean basin creates a natural crossroads for trade and cultural exchange. • Rome is distant from other eastern Mediterranean powers during its early years. • The Mediterranean Sea provides protection and offers ports for trading, • The Alps provide protection from invading land forces, • The Po and Tiber River valleys provide optimum areas for settlement Click Here
