  1. Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty Fall 2013

  2. What is Plagiarism? Plagiarism is the act of taking another person's writing, conversation, song, or even idea and passing it off as your own. This includes information from web pages, books, songs, television shows, email messages, interviews, articles, artworks or any other medium. Whenever you paraphrase, summarize, or take words, phrases, or sentences from another person's work, it is necessary to indicate the source of the information within your paper using an internal citation. It is not enough to just list the source in a bibliography at the end of your paper. Failing to properly quote, cite or acknowledge someone else's words or ideas with an internal citation is plagiarism. http://www.lib.usm.edu/legacy/plag/whatisplag.php

  6. Is this cheating? • Sally and Sue decide to work together on their Social Studies reading questions. Sally is a good student and does really well on her assignments, but reading is a struggle for Sue. Sue decides to allow Sally to find the answers and she writes them down after she agrees that the answer is correct. Sue does this for all of the reading comprehension questions.

  7. Copying that is Cheating • Copying another persons assignment when not told to directly do that is cheating. • Allowing someone to copy your assignment for any reason then specifically told to you by a teacher is cheating. • Working together to complete an assignment, such as homework, that is intended to evaluate what you know.

  8. Solutions • What can you do to help someone who is struggling and asking to copy your work? • What if you don’t get the work?

  9. Is this cheating? • Matthew is sitting sideways in his seat during the test.

  10. Cheating with Tests and Quizzes • Looking at someone else's paper during the test • Using study guides not intended for you – might actually hurt • Holding your paper up so someone else can see it. • Using anything to help you on the test – cheat sheets, edges of notes, or papers on or under your desk

  11. Consequences of Cheating on Test or Quizzes • Zero on the assignment • Loss of trust you won’t do it again • Significant hit to your grade

  12. Is this cheating? • I wrote a paper last year on the first amendment. I think I will turn it in again and just change the title and the date.

  13. Cheating on on Papers or Essays • No copy and paste from the internet • Use reliable sources • You can only under use citations at this stage not over use them • Don’t recycle papers from previous years

  14. Consequences of Cheating on Essays or Papers • Zero on the assignment • Loss of trust you won’t do it again • Significant hit to your grade • Failure of the course

  15. Is this cheating? • Maddie and Kyle are working in a group with Sam and Allie. Kyle has no clue about the Constitution. He will just copy down the answers they have and not worry about if he gets it. He will let the group do the work for him.

  16. Cheating in Group Work • Not taking responsibility for learning and understanding the material • Not participating in the final product • Not helping out your struggling group members • Not asking for help or clarification from the teach or group when needed
