What is NOT IW • Not talking about End Users • Uploading documents • Entering List Data • etc..
Information Worker Technologies • Focus on empowering POWER USERS • Features enabled creation of complex solutions WITHOUT CODE* • Frequently, multiple tools used to create components of a solution • No-Code / Low-Code - but still “Development”
Composite Solutions / Composites When given multiple components that can be dynamically configured and combined, technical users (not just developers) can create powerful business solutions. • Web Parts • Lists / Libraries • Workflow • Forms • External Data
Information Worker Solutions • Dashboards / Views / KPIs – ohhhh, pretty • Master / Detail views • Custom forms and process automation • Custom actions (workflows)
A brief and sad history • Introduced in the good ‘ole days of SharePoint 2003 • Arguably peaked with 2007 release – “Composite Applications” • Attempts to improve with 2010 largely missed the mark • Neglected in 2013
Two flagship tools • InfoPath • SharePoint Designer • WYSIWYG editor • Declarative Workflows
IW in lots of different roles • Business User • Power User • Site Owner • Site Collection Owner • Developer • Administrator
Skills – No/Low Code Web Parts
Skills – Code Development
Dashboards / Composites • Can still build custom pages • Can still connect web parts* • Content by Search (no more CBQ)
SharePoint Designer • Design View is gone • DVWPs are gone* • New Data Views will be handled using JavaScript overrides called Client Side Rendering (CSR)
(function () { var overrideCtx = {}; overrideCtx.Templates = {}; overrideCtx.Templates.Fields = { 'Actual_x0020_Completion_x0020__x': { 'View' : ColorfulPercent } }; function ColorfulPercent(ctx) { var ret = []; var percentVal = ctx.CurrentItem.Actual_x0020_Completion_x0020__x; var percentNum = Number(percentVal.split(' ')[0]); ret.push("<span style='font-weight:bold;color:"); if (percentNum <= 100 && percentNum > 66) { ret.push("#0000FF"); } if (percentNum <= 66 && percentNum > 33) { ret.push("#00FF00"); } if (percentNum <= 33) { ret.push("#FF0000"); } ret.push("'>" + percentVal + "</span>"); return ret.join(''); } SPClientTemplates.TemplateManager.RegisterTemplateOverrides(overrideCtx); })(); CSR Example
SharePoint Designer - Workflows • 2010 Workflows still supported… • 2013 Workflows introduced • Support looping / stages • Web Service Calls* • Can call/initiate 2010 workflows
InfoPath • No clear guidance has been provided • No additional features for 2013 • Think Silverlight, not dead but…
Excel & Visio Services • Not extensively used in most organizations • Great for building interactive dashboards and data visualizations • Requires Enterprise… • Excel (with Office Professional Plus) contains Power View for data exploration and visualization
Access Services • Microsoft’s “shining example” of Composites • “Access Apps” are published to SharePoint as Apps • Uses SQL behind the scenes • Each App = a database • Means other applications can connect (think reporting, integration, etc) • Automation configured with macros (User Interface & Data) NOTworkflows
Apps • Clearly a HUGE investment area for SharePoint • Early stages of the Store • WILL play a role in future IW story
