  2. Director General Deputy Director General for National Accounts and Statistical Analysis Deputy Director General for Economic Statistics Deputy Director General for Methodology and Statistical Information Deputy Director General for Social Statistics Directorate of Statistical Methodology Directorate of Statistical Dissemination Directorate of Statistical Information System Subdirectorate of Statistical Mapping Subdirectorate of Statistical Design Directorate of Sampling Frame Directorate of Statistical Classification and Standardization Base Map Section Map Digitizing Section Geographic Information Section Organizational Chart of BPS – Statistics Indonesia

  3. The Main Tasks of Statistical Mapping Subdirectorate • Managing regional statistical offices in sketching maps of enumeration areas and administrative areas (province, regency/city, subdistrict, and village) • Managing regional statistical offices in coding administrative area and enumeration area • Archiving enumeration area and administrative area sketch maps • Digitizing and updating administrative boundaries based on administrative area sketch maps • Making census maps for publication

  4. Availability of Maps in BPS • Sketch maps  guidance for enumerator • Province by regency/city • Regency/city by subdistrict • Subdistrict by village • Village by enumeration area • Enumeration area • Digital maps  making census map • Indonesia by province, regency/city, subdistrict, and village

  6. Administrative Area Coding System (2)

  7. Enumeration Area Coding System 1 2 3 B/K/P Type of enumeration area: B = Biasa  ordinary K = Khusus  specific P = Persiapan  empty Series number: 001,002,003,...

  13. Sketch Map of Regency/City by Subdistrict

  14. Sketch Map of Subdistrict by Village

  15. Sketch Map of Village by Enumeration Area

  16. Sketch Map of Enumeration Area

  17. Developing Digital Map • Started in 1994; collaborated with National Coordinating Agency for Survey and Mapping to obtain digital map of Indonesia by regency/city (scale 1 : 250,000) • Digitizing subdistrict boundaries inside each regency/city polygon based on sketch map of regency/city by subdistrict • Digitizing village boundaries inside each subdistrict polygon based on sketch map of subdistrict by village

  18. Use of GIS Software • Digitizing administrative area boundaries based on sketch maps  ArcInfo • Administrative area index mapping  ArcView • Statistical mapping  ArcView; ArcMap • Statistical GIS  MapObject

  19. Average of Agricultural-Household Income

  20. IMR of East Java Province bySubdistrict

  21. GIS for Nutrition Mapping

  22. GIS for Poverty Mapping 1

  23. Recent Program and Planning • Upgrading accuracy of administrative area digital map • Using GPS • On screen digitizing administrative area boundaries based on topographic map of National Coordinating Agency for Survey and Mapping or such as Google Earth’s map • Delineating enumeration area boundary using GPS • Developing statistical WebGIS

  24. Reason for Upgrading Accuracy of Administrative Area Digital Map (1) • Digitizing administrative boundaries based on administrative area sketch map caused the digital map is not geo-referenced. This map actually can not be used for spatial analysis purpose. • National Mapping Office can not provide yet administrative area digital map for village level; many people and institutions using BPS’ digital map, even for spatial analysis purpose.

  25. Reason for Upgrading Accuracy of Administrative Area Digital Map (2) • Geo-referenced digital map can improve accuracy of statistics related to area and distance. • Geo-referenced digital map can be used for spatial and geo-statistic analysis purpose.

  26. Planning for Preparation of 2010 Population Census (1) • Reforming enumeration area • Current enumeration area is not familiar to local people, so the enumeration area will be reformed based on neighborhood association • Sketching maps of enumeration areas and administrative areas • Reforming enumeration areas and sketching maps of enumeration and administrative areaswill be conducted in 2008 and 2009. The priority regencies will be subdistricts/villages area which are predicted unchanged until Population Census 2010

  27. Planning for Preparation of 2010 Population Census (2) • Delineating boundaries of enumeration and administrative areas using GPS are started in 2009. The priority will be the big cities. • BPS needs assistances of institutions (UNSD or other) for making enumeration area maps for 2010 Population Census

  28. Study for Delineating Boundaries Using GPS (1) • Conducted in 2006 and 2007 • Finding: • Sometimes boundaries of enumeration/ administrative area can not be traced • Week or no signal in dense populated area • When the administrative area boundaries can not be delineated with GPS, the boundaries can be delineated with on screen digitizing topographic map or high-resolution such as Google Earth’s map, but the maps are costly enough

  29. Study for Delineating Boundaries Using GPS (2) • GPS dataprocessing is not so easy, training is necessary • Indonesia is very wide country, there is 33 provinces, 456 regencies and cities, 5905 subdistricts, and 72303 villages. Ideally 1 GPS receiver is used to delineate 10 villages  BPS needs about 7230 units of GPS receivers  inadequate financial allocation
