  3. Goal • APSP seeks to document the effectiveness of spa treatment in lower back care • If successful, spa therapy would become eligible for a CPT code and reimbursement • Private • Public

  4. Requirement for Reimbursement • Well-designed clinical study showing the effectiveness of therapy published in a peer-reviewed journal, such as Spine

  6. Study Design • Application of a new technology to measure impairment of individual muscles of the back based upon electrical energy emitted by the muscles of the back during very light exercise. • Similar to an EKG for muscles of the back.

METHODS • Before Spa Therapy • Self reported lower back pain or impairment • Measure degree of impairment using • Self report • IMS technology • After Spa Therapy • Immediate • Self Report • IMS Technology • 20 Minutes • Self Report • IMS Technology • 1 hour • Self Report • IMS Technology • 24 Hours • Self Report • IMS Technology

  8. METHODS • Repeat Spa Therapy after 48 hours • Repeat Measurements • Continue 3x per week for 6 weeks

  9. RESULTS Expected • Measured improvement in back pain based on IMS measured back pain and self report relative to before spa therapy. • Results adjusted for • Concomitant therapy such as medications • Initial severity of back injury • Location of injury
