  2. Steps in Cornell Note Taking Set your paper up to resemble the Cornell note format. On the subject line, write the title of the notes (Our school uses the format from AVID. It is an expected standard and paper is provided if desired.)

  3. Steps in Cornell Note Taking 1. Record – use right side column to record specific, detailed notes • Use Abbreviations • Paraphrase ideas • Use symbols (arrows, circles, underlining) or highlight important information, ideas/words that are unclear • Include graphics (diagrams, charts when relevant

  4. Steps in Cornell Note Taking 2. Reduce by writing key terms, names, dates or classic studies and the like in the left column about the information to the right. These will be memory cues to aid in recall. • Within 24 hours of taking notes, review the information recorded making sure to identify main ideas about specific content in the right hand column.

  5. Steps in Cornell Note Taking 3. Recite – cover the right side column and read the cues you have recorded making sure you can recall and understand the information you have recorded. The terms in the left column can be a memory cue.

  6. Steps in Cornell Note Taking • 4. Reflect – create a mental picture of the notes you have taken. • Read and recall cues from the left side column again! And again! Be sure you have this information in your memory and will be able to apply it to the test questions posed.

Steps in Cornell Note Taking • Summary – (write a brief summary on the information form the right hand section of your Cornell notes section on the last several lines of your Cornell paper.) • For AP, consider recording any questions you might have to ask in class • 5. REVIEW-Spend a few minutes each day reviewing your notes from the textbook and class. It works wonders on your grades!
