Learn to estimate, make a table of values, and use place value to divide multi-digit numbers using the division algorithm. Develop math language skills and solve problems independently.

Pass in your H.W. (in class’s tray don’t forget your name!) • Pick up a NEW packet (on top of projector). • On front cover of packet, fill in NAME, CLASS and DATE. • Copy the two items below onto the cover of your NEW packet (anywhere is fine) An algorithm is a procedure for solving a problem.
Today’s Objective: • I will be able to estimate, make a table of values, and use place value to divide multi-digit numbers using the division algorithm. • I will demonstrate my understanding when I can independently complete the odd numbered problems of pg. 60 using the division algorithm on my whiteboard. (6.NS.B.2)
Language Objective • By the end of the lesson, I will be able to use all four language domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing to complete the assigned math problems. • I will be able to use math language words like create, evaluate, analyze while solving the math problems. • I will show I understand by solving the exercise on page 60 by using division strategies (algorithm). • Math Language Vocabulary • Create, evaluate, analyze, algorithm, apply, bring down, distributing, shifting, quotient, estimate
Mini-Lesson • Practice • Closing • H.W. update & T.T.G.
Mini Lesson: … that when we “bring down” the next digit in the algorithm, we are distributing, recording, and shiftingto the next place value.
Mini Lesson: Place Value 6 thousands (1,0001,0001,0001,0001,0001,000) 2 hundreds (100100 ) 1 tens (10 ) 4 ones (1 1 1 1 ) 6,214 Standard Form:
ESTIMATING : pg. 55 70,000 ÷ ? ………….….70,072…………….? 80,000 70,000
ESTIMATING : pg. 55 70,000 ÷ 20 ? ………….….19…………….? 20 10
ESTIMATING : pg. 55 70,000 ÷ 20 Divide each number by ten for efficiency. The quotient of 70,072 and19 should be about 3,500.
ESTIMATING : pg. 55 Because the divisor,19 ,is not a friendly number , a good strategy is to create a table of values to show the multiples of 19.
ESTIMATING : pg. 56 7 ten thousands 0 thousands 0 hundreds 7 tens 2 ones divisor dividend
ESTIMATING : pg. 56 divisor dividend
ESTIMATING : pg. 56 divisor dividend
ESTIMATING : pg. 56 divisor dividend
ESTIMATING : pg. 56 divisor dividend
ESTIMATING : pg. 56 divisor dividend
How do you feel? topic.
Classwork: pg. 60 • Students will estimate, make a table of values, and use place value to divide multi-digit numbers using the division algorithm to work independently on the odd problems on page 60 using their white boards. • Students will then turn and check their answers with their neighbor. • Finally there will be a whole class check-in
Closing: Explain in your own words how the division algorithm works. The division algorithm shows successive (one after the other) estimates of the quotient organized by place value, …..other answers…… the division algorithm breaks one large division problem into several smaller ones organized by place value.
