Tasks and activities • The Construction Engineer on Hydro – Meliorative Systems is specialized to study, design, build and operate irrigation systems and facilities. • Irrigation systems are a combination of irrigation and drainage facilities. For the climatic conditions of Bulgaria this activity is vital. • The Irrigation systems accumulate river water in dams catch waters through pumping stations, and through channels and gears transport them from the water source to the irrigated crops. • The Drainage systems take the excess water from the arable land to the receiving water.

Professional development • A peculiarity of the profession is a broad field of knowledge that includes everything the construction engineer needs, coupled with knowledge and skills to manage and use water resources and soil improvement. To pursue this profession, creative thinking, good computer literacy is needed to solve specific atypical problems in the following directions : water economic research for available and usable water resources; management of water use with care for environmental protection; designing facilities to capture, accumulation and transportation of water; to prevent from floods; for automate the technological processes; research work in institutes, higher education institutions..

Professional development • The broad knowledge of construction engineers on Irrigation and Drainage are a reason for their high authority abroad (Syria, Morocco, Algeria, Cube, Mexico, Australia, America), where many of them find work through Bulgarian companies or in a private business.

Objects and means of labor • When designing construction Engineer on HMS uses technical literature and regulations, performs calculations with help of the calculator or computer; draws and inscribed drawings with pencil and ink on drawing table or on computer

Work place • The Construction Engineer on Hydro-Meliorative systems works in an office building or wagon; on a construction site; in a construction lab; in cabinets and research laboratories; in study rooms and outdoor in nature and in experimental fields. Training in the profession • Engineering training is expensive because the costs of textbooks, notebooks, paper, drawing tools, calculator, computer, folders and others are very high. Students should be provided with accommodation costs or campus. • Engineer on Hydro-Meliorative Systems are trained in UACEG University in the city of Sofia.

Training places • In the UACEG University recently about sixty students are studying ,,Irrigation and Drainage Engineering” speciality. • TheFacultyofHydraulicEngineering (FHE) belongingtotheUniversityofArchitecture, CivilEngineeringandGeodesy (UACEG) inits 65-year historyisrecognizedastheuniqueauthorizedhighereducationalinstitutionspecializedintrainingofMScengineersandpost-graduatestudents (PhD) aswellasawardingdiplomasinthefieldofWater Supply andSewage, WaterandWasteWaterTreatment, HydraulicEngineeringandIrrigationandDrainage Systems. The FHE trainingreflectsthedynamicchangesinthewatersectoranditis a responsetothesocialrequestofbusinessandinstitutionsandlabormarketdemands. The FHE tothe UACEG is a drivingforceforknowledgeexchangebetweenscienceandengineeringpracticewhichfurtherstheformationofwelltrainedcontemporaryspecialists. • Thespeciality“ Irrigation and Drainage Engineering ” hastwodegreeprograms – “Irrigation Systems” and “Drainage Systems”.

Training places • TheFacultyofHydraulicEngineeringistheuniqueacademicinstitutionfortrainingreclamationengineersinthefieldof “IrrigationandDrainageEngineering” – watersectorwhichisabsolutelynecessaryforthecontemporaryagriculture. • TheFacultyofHydraulicEngineeringhas a richlaboratorybasis (includingequipmentsforcomputerliteracy) forstudentpracticaltrainingaswellasforresearchactivityintheareaofwaterengineeringandtechnologies. • TheFHE trainingmeetstherequirementsoftheEuropeansystemfortransferandcreditsaccumulation ECTS (Europeansystemreviewingthedegreeofstudentslearningofthestudieddisciplines). ThisallowsanauthorizedtrainingofstudentsinrelatedEuropeanuniversities.

Prospects for specialization • Thesuccessfulgraduatesfindtheirprofessionalrealizationatdesign, constructionassemblageandothercompanieshavingvariousactivitiesinnumerousfieldsofbuildingandconstructionsuchasdesign, constructionandoperationofhydropowersystemsandstructures, hydromeliorativesystemsandfacilities, watersupplyandsewagesystemsandworks, purificationofnaturalwaterandwastewatertreatment (domesticandindustrialwastes); solidwastestreatments, gassupplyingofsettlementsandbuildings; Theyoungspecialistscanfindjobsininstitutionsofecologicalcontrolsuchasregionalinspectionsofenvironmentalconservationandwater (RIOCW), riverbasindirectoratesandcounsels, managementstructuresinthecorrespondingdepartmentsandservicesofministries, regional, townandmunicipalcounsels, investmentgroupsbelongingtodifferentcompaniesandenterprises. Thegraduatescanworkasteachersintechnicalschoolsandlecturersinthe UACEG, inresearchandcontrollaboratories, researchinstitutions, commercialfirmsandagencieswithsubjectofactivitymediationandcommerceinthefieldofbuilding, consultingcompanies, firmsandexpertdepartments, civilengineersinbanks, insuringcompaniesandinstitutions.

Prospects for specialization • The Department deliversspecialcoursesfortheMasterdegreeprograms “HydraulicEngineering” and “IrrigationandDrainageEngineering” andtheBachelordegreeprogram “WaterEngineering”. • The Department is a mergeroftwodepartmentsinvolvedinthefoundationoftheFacultyofHydraulicEngineering – "HydraulicEngineering" and "IrrigationandDrainageEngineering".

Prospects for specialization • Thestaffofthedepartmentworksandeducatesspecialistswhicharecapableforstudy, design, construction, managementandmaintenanceof: (i) damsandappurtenantstructures; (ii) undergroundhydraulicstructures; (iii) tailingdamsandslagdumps; (iv) water-powersystemsandfacilities; (v) irrigationanddrainagesystemsandstructures, aswellason-farmirrigation; (vi) pumpingstations; (vii) automationofirrigationanddrainagesystems; (viii) rivertraining, harbour- andcoast-protectingstructures; (ix) watermanagementand (x) environmentprotection. • The Department holds 35 coursesin FHE and a totalof 4 coursesinFacultyofArchitectureandFacultyofGeodesy.

Prospects for specialization • Theresearchandpracticalexperienceofthestaff, togetherwiththespecialsoftwareavailable, contributetothehighlevelofeducation, aswellasforsolvingcomplexandnon-standardproblemsinthefieldofhydraulic, irrigationanddrainageengineering. • Thelaboratoriesatthe Department havewidevarietyofmodelsofhydraulicstructuresandfacilities. Theoperationregimesofwater-powerstationsandpumped-storagepowerstationsequippedwithimpulseandreactionturbinesandreversibleunitscanbedemonstrated. Thelaboratoriesprovidemodelandnaturalstudiesonfiltration, pressurisedandfree-surfaceflows, pumpingstations’ modesofoperation, automationequipmentforirrigationanddrainagestructures, etc. AllthelabfacilitiesareusedalsoforexperimentalandresearchworkofPhDstudents.

Prospects for specialization • A realobjectisdevelopedunderthesupervisionof a lecturerfromtheIrrigationandDrainageEngineering Department. ThethemeoftheMasterDegreethesiscanbeoneofthefollowing: Irrigation Systems, Drainage Systems, RiverCorrections, PumpingStations, ExploitationofIrrigationandDrainage Systems, WaterEconomics. Itispossibletodevelop a projectunderthesupervisionof a lecturerfromtheother Department intheFaculty. Theavailablethemesare: Hydraulics, Hydrology, HydraulicStructures, OrganizationofIrrigationandDrainageEngineering Systems Building.

Prospects for specialization • Thetraininginthissubjecthas a goaltogivestudents a knowledgeforthehydrologicalprocessesthatareimportantindesigning, buildingandmanagementofthewatersupply, sewerage, irrigationanddrainagenetworksaswellashydraulicstructures. Inthecoursearepresentedallmainprocessesinvolvedintothehydrologicalcyclesuchasprecipitation, evaporation, infiltrationandriverrunoff. Subjectoflearningarethemethodsforassessmentofthebasichydrologicalcharacteristicsusedforenvironmentalimpactassessmentaswellasindesigningandmanagementofthewatersupply, sewerage, irrigationanddrainagenetworksaswellasrivertrainingstructures.

Private companies are possible to ensure higher wages. In the last ten years it is hard to find a job due to complex reforms in the country’s economy. In these difficult years the engineers on Hydro-Meliorative Systems are realized in related professions: engineers in construction companies; in the construction and maintenance of water supply and sewerage systems; in research institutes and in trade.
