  3. Symphony • Played by orchestra (woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings) • Four movements (parts) each with a different tempo and mood • Sonata form Haydn’s Symphony No. 26

  7. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart • 1756 – 1791 • Child prodigy: composed first song when 5 years old • Musicians were treated as servants but Mozart • could not think of himself as a servant and rebelled • Composed about 1000 pieces.

  8. Concerto A piece written for soloist and orchestra. Form: Orchestra – Soloist – Orchestra – Soloist - etc Listening Example: Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21

  9. Theme and Variation A theme or simple melody is introduced. The composer then changes the music with dynamics, tempo, style, rhythmic ideas, mode (mood), instruments, etc. to create variations of the same simple melody. The melody is heard throughout. Variation 3 THEME Variation 1 Variation 2
