  4. End of WW2 China • Japan leaves • Nationalists corrupt and inefficient  tensions between Nationalists and Communists • Civil War erupts

  5. 1944 to 1947 • US plays peacemaker • Fails to negotiate peace • 1949 • Nationalists flee to Taiwan • Communists take control

  6. American’s viewed the communist take over of China as a failure of Containment • Led to powerful fear of communism

  7. Korean War • Japan annexed Korea in 1910 • Ruled until 1945 • Troops north of the 38th parallel surrendered to the Soviets; South to the Americans • Two nations developed: North and South Korea • Communist North Korea • Democratic South Korea

  8. US began moving out of Korea in 1949 • Soviet’s prepared to assist North Korea in gaining back South

  9. Attack! • June 25, 1950 • North Korea attacks South Korea • Makes their way quickly south • June 27th • Truman orders US assistance in Korea • All under command of General Douglas MacArthur [UN]

  10. The US in Korea • North Korea makes great strides • Push all the way to Pusan by September of 1950 • MacArthur launches a counter attack • Traps North Korea forces between US and South Korean • Pushes North back to the nearly the border between Korea and China

  12. Chinese Step In in Korea • Fearful of invasion by American [UN] troops • Join the war on the side of North Korea • Wanted a buffer state between themselves and Democracy • Drive back American forces to 38th parallel • Stalemate

  13. MacArthur vs. Truman • MacArthur wants to attack China • Truman says ‘No Way!’ • Continues to criticize the president • Truman fires MacArthur • American’s outraged • Later committees agreed with Truman’s decision due to feelings for limiting the war

  14. Stalemate • Truce talks begin July 1951 • Agree on: • Location of cease-fire line • Establishment of demilitarized zone between opposing sides • War ends in July 1953
